So long story short, the half Buckhorn sights that come on the gbl's suck. What alternatives do I have? Would prefer peep and not to give up an arm and a kidney for new sights.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. I should have also mentioned that I want them to be robust as this is mainly my backpacking gun when hiking. Lots of grizzlies in areas like grande cache. Those who had Skinner and XS sights. Any in country locations to order from?

A buddy of mine, that's into gunsmithing, picked my XS up for me as part of one of his orders through Brownell's.

Western Gun Parts usually has a couple of the XS sight/rails from the 1895SBL kicking around, worth a call anyways.

That being said... I'd personally just buy a Skinner. Great product, you won't regret it.

I've never used the Skinner sight but have had several rifles with Lyman or Williams FP receiver sights over the years. My 336 has a Lyman on it and it works perfectly as expected.

Q?? .... Why is the Skinner now so often suggested over the tried and tested Lyman and Williams FP offerings?

Perhaps Skinner gets the nod, as they offer some streamlined options. And are generally robust, and more symmetrical.

They are a very durable streamlined product that compliment the look of the rifle along with having great function. They are also the only sight (I'm aware of) that is offered in stainless.

I wouldn't say they are better in every aspect as a rear sight. If I was purchasing sights for a rifle with the intention of shooting various types of ammo and or required convenient adjustment for distance shooting, then Skinner would not be my first choice. They are best served on a "set it and forget it" kind of rifle. IMO

I have purchased at least a dozen sights from Skinner (Andy) and they have all been quality pieces. It's a Mom/Pop kind of company that has been a pleasure to deal with, that aspect is also a component in me recommending them to people.

I have the XS sight/rails with my 1895SBL of course. Great setup, but I also mounted a scout scope with QD, so the sights are there for backup. I have Skinner sights on a Marlin 1894 and a 39A. Probably the best aftermarket iron sights for the Marlin's from my experience. Good value for the money and quick shipping from the US.

I know I bought my first skinner sight because at the time I couldn't find an xs sight anywhere and they wouldn't ship. That was from the original Tim Skinner :). I liked em a lot and the price is right so continued supporting them.

I agree that the Williams fp or similar sights would be better for rifles using multiple loads of varying bullet weights.

I have owned both, I prefer the winged XS, easy adjustment and they don't snag on gun cases etc., the Skinner look nicer and are still a good sight.

The only thing I can't get behind with the xs sights is the price. I find the skinners are much cheaper, or am I missing something?

Keep in mind as well, the XS is only a "ghost ring" sight (unless they've recently changed that). Other brands allow you to thread in a smaller aperature.
