Looking to get a new scope for my hunting rifle, model 700 in 7mm mag. Have been eyeballing the Leupold VX-R in 3-9x50mm with ballistic firedot reticle. Anyone have experience with these? Is there a better choice around that price point?

Excellent scopes,

I've had (1) 1.25-4, (2) 2-7's & (4) 3-9's. A couple of the 3-9's had the BFD reticle the rest were the duplex firedot and (1) Firedot 4.

The 3-9's were my favorite model, but the BFD reticle was not. I find the circle part of the reticle makes it a bit too busy and serves no real purpose (for me anyways). The Firedot 4 is my favorite, but wouldn't be best at longer ranges I would think.

As far as the Scope model itself: The glass is excellent, the illumination system is one of the best available, the reticles are etched, and the adjustments/eyepiece focus are very nice.

I have a 3-9x40 VXR w/ Ballistic firedot on my Model 70 7mm WSM, and am very happy with it. Lightweight, clear optics, holds zero well, what else could you want? I don't find they're over priced, as the lightweight aspect increases production cost significantly. It limits what materials can be used, how many lenses can be used, etc., and to pull that off without compromising on other areas makes it worth the cost IMHO.

I had that model as well, shot it out to 600 yards on my RFB, great scope. Well constructed, good glass. My favorite feature is the firedot, never have to worry about leaving it on and burning through battery's. Not like my Razor 1-4, that thing loves new batteries.

What I like about the VX-R series scopes are the automatic reticle illumination which turns on and off by sensing movement and the weight of them. I also like the ballistic firedot reticle. One thing to be aware of is that while the wind-age and elevation controls are MOA for most of the VX-R scopes, the VX-R Patrol scopes are in Mils

I picked up a VX-R 1-4 fire dot on the EE and I really like it.
It has great glass - bright and clear and the fire dot reticle is fantastic.

Has Leupold made improvements on the VX-R series since 5 years ago?
I have a VXR Patrol 3-9x40 with the illuminated dot and it's just ok. I find the gen 1 Zeiss Conquest (non-HD) way clearer.

I have that VXR Patrol in 3-9x 40 and I love it for my M70 Winnie Featherweight .308 for deer / moose... Most happy with the super good deal here on the EE Forum!

Cheers,

Barney

Thanks TT.
I compared it side by side with a buddy's ancient Bausch and Lomb 3x9 and his was absolutely amazing. I could see the holes (.308) at 100 yds with his but not with the Leuppy

That's why I was wondering if improvements were made the last few years.

I got a 4-12×40 that did double duty on my rfb and MV. I really like it as long as I don't look at it next to my Nightforce. The weight is awsome and so is the dot. I find the bdc reticle a bit od for me, I am use to the burris bdc that is graduated for standard 308 at 100 yard but the leupold one is zero at 200 and not for the 308. But part from that it is great. There's not to much competition for illuminated reticle at that price ( I'm not the biggest vortex fan)
