Any one here use the 458 Hornady 300 gr hollow point on game?

I may be going deer hunting in a center fire zone and got to thinking I could finally use this box I've had for years. My sxs won't regulate them but I could load them up for my 458 wm
Just curious how they perform. My data says start in load of imr4198 gives 2265fps

I've used this bullet on Bighorn Sheep in my 45-70 Ruger No.1 at an impact speed of around 2300 fps. Shoots clear through. Probably won't penetrate like that on bigger game.

Good to know. I loaded from 58-63 grs. If they shoot accurately ill use a lower velocity loading

They'll be used for deer and possibly a wolf. I'm using 400 gr ppsn woodlieghs for bear

Current hunting load for my 458 Lott is the 300gr TSX or 300gr HP at 2500 fps MV, a mild load. Both bullets shoot to the same impact point at 100 meters. The 400gr Woodleigh should be a good penetrator on heavy game.

I haven't taken any game with the woodlieghs yet in either 300 wm or my 458 wm
My 458 didn't like the 500 gr round nose but cuts a single hole with the 400 ppsn. Recovered bullets look great
Hopefully I'll take a big bear this fall with one of them

Was just thinking the 300 gr Hornady hollow points would be better for deer. Gives me an excuse you use them. I had originally planned on building a 458 socom or 458/2" to use light bullets

310gr 35 caliber Woodleigh RN SN bullets shoot broadside clear through Moose from my 358 Winchester BLR at an impact speed of about 1700 fps. Woodleigh's seem to be well-constructed bullets.

The 300gr HP bullets have a thin jacket. If driven too fast like around 2700 fps these will disintegrate in flight.

I have the 500gr 45 caliber PP SN bullets loaded in my 45-70 Handi Rifle at 1750 fps.

Bet that hand rifle got dance pushing that load
I load 405 gr silver cast flat nose at 1600 fps in my double. Smooth and soft shooting keeps the muzzle rise down for a faster second shot. The gun wouldn't regulate the 300 gr
I've often wondered how fast I could push them with my 458 wm. Be like a varmint rifle lol.
Once I'm home again ill see how the wm pushes them
Be nice to use that rifle more. I absolutely love it

Realistically, any 458 bullet will do the trick on deer. But since you've got 'em, you might as well smoke 'em!

Shot a med 4x4 WT buck chasing a doe at about 100 yards through some small poplars with the Hornady 300gr HP 45-70 and I don't think it even opened .A finger sized through and through hole and he expired within 30 yards.Photobucket is acting up so no pic.Harold

Must have been a fairly low impact speed. Large exit wound on Bighorn Sheep at ~2300 fps impact.

Not sure of the velocity but out of a 22" Marlin lever 54gr of IMR 3031 and a 300hr HP ..........between 1700-1800fps.It shoots 1/2" groups so I didn't up the powder as it is the old pre-extra safety curved butt stock model and recoil was good where it was........Harold

I do agree however I was looking for rapid expansion on deer. I've found thru hunting with muzzleloaders they can still go quite far even when well hit with stronger built bullets.
I was hoping these 300 gr hollow points would expand well without coming apart
I'd like a lung shot to save meat even though I'm a fan of the shoulder shot
