So after a rather sleepless night I was up well before day light, boiled the billy and had a cup of Tea, stoked up the home fire, loaded up the hilux and headed off for a quick run around one of our properties before the light hit as I have a few nuisance deer coming in after hours! nothing much too see there but the fog and mist was thick down low along the rivers.
I was meeting Joefish out in a valley around day break, so with a few minutes the valley started to lighten up and shapes were made visiable across valleys, yet a complete floor carpeted in White shiney stuff!! the Severe frost had well and truly settled.

-5 at the home valleys, -8 degrees once up in the hill about to step out as I met Joe at an intersection in the scrub.

we mentioned what was real apparent, it was cold out !!

loaded stuff into my Ute and heading up the Road to a cheeky car park spot and jumped out, intentions to hunt til around 1-2 o clock in the arvo, in a few ridges we would split up and go our own ways, on our own agenda.
or so that was the plan.

Within a few hundred meters from the creek floor tangled in blackberry it wasn't long until I hear a bit of movement, possibly a deers antlers on tree, or perhaps a half skittish deer scenting us from the cold gulleys which were no doubt breathing in and out with the slightest movements that only a Sambar deer could pick up..

cresting the top half of the gulley it was apparent there was a deer below me, so I snuck in pretty quick, Joe was about 20metrers behind by now and I raced off into the gulley head hoping to spy this deer below, step by step, waiting, and then it had seen me, off she shot like a bat out of hell..
We remained very still for a few moments

thump thump- I hear from ahead of me, then the silence took over again

a motionless bush lay ahead as I peeked up to the ridgeline, trying to find something- I seen some polished white sticks sway slightly from up hill position, scan down and almost lock onto our position, I tried to get some footage an make minimal movement, it was starring right this way!

then he turned and I again tried to get some proof in the pudding , stags on film, before I put the camera down rather quick once I got a good look at hes Antlers , put the scope of kim on #4 and lined up around the shoulder, he took a step forward and I shanked another shot through the Kimber..

2 deer ran off, a small calf topped out of the gulley, I whispered to Joe to come up, but keep an eye out on the far side incase a deer with horns was moving, and if so. shoot it.

no need as no deer ran off, so we split and walked into the gulley ahead of us, to search for the deer..

Found it an got some photos and hi fives , rolled a smoke before heading off into a spur to glass the sun faces which was now hittin the mountains..

we picked up 2 deer in the two hours we sat an admired the bush, talking abut the mornings moment, ive really enjoyed this aspect of hunting with joe of past year, deer or no deer its generally a good time but with deer it seems to be great times.

sorry to blow the story so short now, but I have some footage I will complie into a video shortly...

Thanks dudes!

I wanna go ....

so accessible for international hunters to delve into, however the warning must be put out in advance, these deer are no bugling elk and the hunting is 101 basic bush stalking or glass faces across valleys and shoot them at 200-400 meters, they don't like the open country and its all up hill from sun up.. no bias, one of THE hardest deer to hunt and obtain a trophy head (mature)...

with that out of the way, theres plethora of Hinds breeding up which are why the deer are becoming 'pest' status to some, still legal game but relaxed laws for now , its a great time to hunt Sambar..
PM me, email me whatever, if you can afford the Plane ticket, I'd have you set up , picked up and can lend you my time for a week for well under $1500AU including the permit, visitors licenses , an we can shoot as many as we can find lol.
