Whats the feed back from guys usng these low power straight tube scopes for huntng? I am looking at a scope in the 1-6, 1-8 power range with etched and illuminated reticle. Concern is the low light performance with straight 24,30 mm tubes.

I have a couple of the low mag scopes in this range and they are great for hunting in the bush. Light gathering isn't an issue if you get reasonable quality glass.

Use whatever yer eyes like?
I've got a few different styles and while my eyes like big power, I don't care for
an AO hunting scope.
Shooting long range has been a by gone era for me and my eyes for a while now.

Play yer limits, stay with in it................

Thanks for the responses guys. My main concern was the low light capability of small objective scopes. I like the low magnification especially deer hunting up here with the odd grizzly prowling around. I would be good with anything from 6-8 x magnification. Just need to find something with an etched reticle and illumination preferably.

Anyone have experience with the new Falcon optics 1-8x24 S8i?

The new Vortex Strike Eagle is 1-8 as well. Might be a good choice. But as you suggested, I wonder how bright a 20-24mm objective is at first/last light.

Depending what and where you hunt, 6 magnification maybe all that you need.

If you look back to say the 80's or further back in Europe all the scopes were fixed magnification and your choice was 4 or 6 mag.

If you hunt whitetails in light cover you may prefer a 6. If the cover is thicker then a 4.

I'm in BC and I hunt deer on logging cuts / regen, so a 1-6 is absolutely perfect. Although in the past I have taken more game with a fixed 4 mag than all of of my other scope times each other. I have tried to shoot precision rifle ( and even then you dial out from the high power magnification sometimes to help with shot placement / moving targets)

There are few things more annoying than hunting with too much power on a scope and not being able to to find the game! Same happens briefly when target shooting but that target is not going to run off.

I want a new scope for my M14 variant, and I was going to go for a 1-8x 24mm, but I shall be settling on a 1-6 instead. Why? I just cannot justify (with my skill set) the extra cost for the extra magnification.

1-6 Mag is the sweet spot in my mind for 90%+ of all hunting applications, with 1-8 or higher being a limited advantage. (IMHO).

Candocad.

Low power scopes don't really need large objective lenses. A 4x scope needs only a 20mm objective lense to gather as much light as the human eye can actually use, has something to do with the exit pupil or some sort of witchcraft type PFM.

Interesting point.

This is important. I miss far more opportunities at close range than far. Ok glass 1-6 isn't too expensive. 1 to 7+ gets more expensive but worth it.

After playing in 3gun I would definitely like to try my Strike Eagle 1-6 with a MK Machine throw lever on a hunting rig.
I've been using a 4-14x40 Leupold SF and at my hunting ranges it's always on the minimum setting...
The Strike Eagle is fast and zoom in and out with a lever is very intuitive once you get used to it and a huge asset in the 3gun game (my opinion) making 100 yard shots or close ups very quick (the ranges I've used are limited to 100, no reason they wouldn't work further out).
I've read complaints on the 1-8 SE, and the glass on the 1-6 SE isn't up to a VX3 level but depending the hunt it could be a winner.
Sometimes less is more.

I keep going back and forth between my 1-4 razor and my 3.5-10 vari-x-III LR. For purely hunting the 1-4 offers more than enough, but for target it's lacking, especially load development. I really want to try the 1-7 sightron, could be a happy medium. If money was no object I'd probably be running the elcan 1-3-9.

I have 2 of these optics on carbines, and one will be on my Bruno zg 30-06 this season . Great glass. It will be replacing a leupy 3-9
