Whats the feed back from guys usng these low power straight tube scopes for huntng? I am looking at a scope in the 1-6, 1-8 power range with etched and illuminated reticle. Concern is the low light performance with straight 24,30 mm tubes.
Low power scopes don't really need large objective lenses. A 4x scope needs only a 20mm objective lense to gather as much light as the human eye can actually use, has something to do with the exit pupil or some sort of witchcraft type PFM.
This is important. I miss far more opportunities at close range than far. Ok glass 1-6 isn't too expensive. 1 to 7+ gets more expensive but worth it.Low power scopes don't really need large objective lenses. I keep going back and forth between my 1-4 razor and my 3.5-10 vari-x-III LR. For purely hunting the 1-4 offers more than enough, but for target it's lacking, especially load development. I really want to try the 1-7 sightron, could be a happy medium. If money was no object I'd probably be running the elcan 1-3-9.
I have 2 of these optics on carbines, and one will be on my Bruno zg 30-06 this season . Great glass. It will be replacing a leupy 3-9
The elcan or the sightron?
How about a Leupold 2-7 VXR with Firedot reticle? Might cover all the bases..
