Hi everyone. I know there has been a lot of "New AR" threads on here with the S&W M&P Sport II being sold for great prices, but I feel I have to add my own. Not just so I can give my 2 cents on the Sport II, but so I can also warn others who like me, have zero self control. First the rifle:

As the title of the post says this is my first AR. I have thought about an AR for a few years now but prices have held me back, and I did not want to go with a Norinco. The price and reviews on this rifle convinced me that now was the time. First step, strip, clean, lube, and inspect (I do this for every new firearm). I am impressed by how easily the AR platform breaks down for cleaning and maintenance. Got it cleaned, lubed, was advised to shoot the AR wet, so wet it is. And all looks good, so back together it goes.

At the range. This is a very nice shooting rifle! And very accurate, even with budget ammunition (PMC X-tac). As a matter of fact, this thing is more fun than kicking kittens! God I wish I could go after coyotes with this thing, but that's a whole other rant. The only beef I could find with the AR platform so far is the direct impingement set up. Very dirty. But I can't knock it too bad because obviously it works. And I am fairly anal about cleaning my guns so this will not be an issue for me.

Bottom line? I like this rifle, a lot. fun to shoot, accurate, and easy stripping and cleaning. This is a keeper for me, and I would recommend this rifle to anyone wanting to try this platform.

Now for the warning. I ordered this rifle thinking that it would be fine just the way it is. Iron sights are good for what I'm going to use it for. Then I thought since my eyes are getting worse in my old age I'll get a red dot. Wanting to stay on a low budget I ordered a Bushnell TRS-25 amd a medium riser. And that's it, I'm set for life.

I draw your attention to the photo above. Note that there is no stock furniture or a TRS-25. These rifles are evil money eaters! It's never "good enough". I bought some Magpul goodies and a Vortex Sparc II. Now I'm thinking of a low profile gas block and a free float hand guard. Why? I DON'T KNOW!

Now I'm looking at rifles thinking I need a second AR. I'm hooked.

If you are like me and have no pause button, run! Run fast and far from AR's. Now I gotta go. There are Canada day sales on AR goodies from numerous site sponsers............

Very nice set up, I was leaning in a similar vain for third party furniture. I think I'd prefer the Magpul MOE K2+ due to the shallower angle. I find the M4 grip on mine too thin and the wrong angle for CQB.

How do you like the SPARC II?

Money pits they definitely are, it usually takes guys a little longer to "need" a second one though so you're definitely in trouble.
I can't even remember how many I've owned over the last few years but I was up to six uppers and four lowers at one time with two AR-10's as well. I'm back down to a shared lower for my 223 upper and dedicated 22LR upper and my complete 9mm rifle.

Try to get your hands on a 9mm AR before you buy your second, it may sway you to own one.

Your "beef" is completely unfounded and has been dis-proven many many times. A lubed AR will work for thousands of rounds without issue and without cleaning... That's if it's a properly built milspec rifle.

Enjoy your AR they're fantastic!

Have bought many AR15's since I was a teen in the 80's and always loved the platform. Throughout my militsry career I have been told to use very little lube. I disagree and use a lot of lube on the AR15 family and they always ran tip top. A few years ago I even ran over a year and a half a cheap Norc M4 with 1600 rds of Norc 223 and never cleaned it once. Only issue I had was the 7 misfires with strong hits on the primer so that was just the ammo. Yea they will run a long time without much cleaning but if you are depending on the rifle for (name your apocalyptic or critical need here) then I would recommend every 300 rds it get a good cleaning.

OP,
Before you go worrying about free floating hand guards and low profile gas blocks and flip up sights, look at getting a good muzzle brake and a good match trigger. The muzzle brake may not make you friends though!
If you think the M&P is the cat's meow now, add the two things and you will have eyes big as saucers.

I just recently got back into the AR game after a very long hiatus and forgot how much fun it was. I'll probably be crucified for it by CGN but I picked up an NEA on a trade. :p

Popping the 4" gong at 200 yards with every shot is a blast. But I know the feeling on the AR bug. Been looking at many of the accessories for it and then at the bank account :d

Don't be so anal about the cleaning because many shooters let these run dirty. I will not clean mine for a few thousand rounds.

Nice to see another fellow shooter has the AR bug.

I forget to clean mine before I left BC. Oh well only 500 rounds thru it... Will be sitting for another 6 months before I can clean mine lol.

They run reliably as long as the ammo isn't garbage, but they do get pretty dirty compared to a piston driven platform. That said I love my AR, and don't mind cleaning it at all.

Most guns run reliably if you don't feed them garbage ammo. If you had read the link you would see that cleaning the rifle is not necessary at the pathetic round count intervals most poeple tend to follow. I'm not saying you should run 5 digits worth of ammo before a cleaning. I'm simply stating that your complaint is completely unfounded as the fouling is far from detrimental to operation of the rifle for many thousands of rounds. As for piston guns, they get just as dirty just in a different location.
