686 Shooter
Regular
Hi everyone. I know there has been a lot of "New AR" threads on here with the S&W M&P Sport II being sold for great prices, but I feel I have to add my own. Not just so I can give my 2 cents on the Sport II, but so I can also warn others who like me, have zero self control. First the rifle:
As the title of the post says this is my first AR. I have thought about an AR for a few years now but prices have held me back, and I did not want to go with a Norinco. The price and reviews on this rifle convinced me that now was the time. First step, strip, clean, lube, and inspect (I do this for every new firearm). I am impressed by how easily the AR platform breaks down for cleaning and maintenance. Got it cleaned, lubed, was advised to shoot the AR wet, so wet it is. And all looks good, so back together it goes.
At the range. This is a very nice shooting rifle! And very accurate, even with budget ammunition (PMC X-tac). As a matter of fact, this thing is more fun than kicking kittens! God I wish I could go after coyotes with this thing, but that's a whole other rant. The only beef I could find with the AR platform so far is the direct impingement set up. Very dirty. But I can't knock it too bad because obviously it works. And I am fairly anal about cleaning my guns so this will not be an issue for me.
Bottom line? I like this rifle, a lot. fun to shoot, accurate, and easy stripping and cleaning. This is a keeper for me, and I would recommend this rifle to anyone wanting to try this platform.

Now for the warning. I ordered this rifle thinking that it would be fine just the way it is. Iron sights are good for what I'm going to use it for. Then I thought since my eyes are getting worse in my old age I'll get a red dot. Wanting to stay on a low budget I ordered a Bushnell TRS-25 amd a medium riser. And that's it, I'm set for life.
I draw your attention to the photo above. Note that there is no stock furniture or a TRS-25. These rifles are evil money eaters! It's never "good enough". I bought some Magpul goodies and a Vortex Sparc II. Now I'm thinking of a low profile gas block and a free float hand guard. Why? I DON'T KNOW!
Now I'm looking at rifles thinking I need a second AR. I'm hooked.
If you are like me and have no pause button, run! Run fast and far from AR's. Now I gotta go. There are Canada day sales on AR goodies from numerous site sponsers............
