Hunting with 1-4,1-6,1-8 scopes

I put my razor HDII 1-6 on a Sako Kodiak in .375 H&H and got me a Grizzly with it about 6 weeks ago.....

I chose the 1-6 because of the huge bright sight picture at 1x, and for the first time ever the illum actually made a difference. At 6x a 350lb bear was plenty big enough at 210 yards.

It's not light (30oz), but ya can't win 'em all.

If your in the bush (under 150yd shot) and/or there's things around that might try and hunt you, I'd say the 1-4 or 1-6 is great. If you think you might be trying a 4-500yd shot, then not enough mag IMO.
 
Uisge. The website lists the optic at 20 oz. what I do really like is the split. 1-7 for hunting i believe will be far more useful than 3-9x

Keeping in mind my hunting ranges will be 0-250 maximum. In the mountains and valleys of the East Kootenay trench, i would be hard pressed to find longer distances than that to spot game unless i was in a farmers field (with permission)

Comparing the Leupy 3-9 and the Sightron 1-7 at comparable powers (assuming the markings are somewhat close on the mag wheel) the Sightron is brighter, and has greater clarity than the Leupy.

The Leupy is lighter though. By 7oz. And it will be cheaper by???

I do like the mil hash reticle, less cluttered I find than mil dot.

I can't wait for this years season!!! Brno zg 30-06 and Sightron 1-7. It will be a good time. The only change I might make, is mounting the scope on a Ruger #1 in 30-06. That combo just hits all my buttons. Svelte, Elegant, Simple. Single shot, light weight, great glass, compact.

I might rethink my hunting rig now...
 
Leupold 1.75-6x scope worked just fine for most of my big game hunting for years including sheep and mountain goat. Shots out to 450yds. Days of innocence, didn't know what a focal plane was , much less 1st or 2nd.Lay on a rock, held a tad high and it's back strap time.
 
Anyone have experience with Primary Arms products from CTC? Their 1-6x24 scopes seem priced well and looks like a more useful reticle than the Strike Eagle.

I`ve heard the Primary Arms scopes are made on the same production line as the Vortex Strike Eagles

I have a PA 1-8x and a 1-6x Strike Eagle so I know its not apples to apples but I`d say thats true based on quality/build/feel
 
Low light performance is a combination of exit pupil, magnification, and optical quality. A 7mm exit pupil is considered the maximum that can be used with young eyes. In Ontario, we have to quit 1/2 hour after sunset, so maximum low light performance isn't really necessary. In Europe, where they hunt much later than we do, the 8x56 is king, and will outperform a 6x42 even though the exit pupils are the same. A 3x20 isn't nearly as bright as a 6x42 of equal quality. Optical quality and lens coatings are also important, and tend to come with pricier glass. A quality 4x32 may outperform a cheap 8x56.

Thanks for the info. I see a few strike eagles on the EE as well as a Primary Arms version. It's interesting that the primary arms retails for a few hundred less and in my mind, has a beter reticle from what I can see. My problem is that there is no retailer anywhere near me that I can go andcheck these scopes out in person, thus I rely on other People's feedback. I have a new Remington 7600 30-06 waiting for a scope so I want to find one soon and get it set up.

How is your PA 1-8 scope, I like the zoom range on that one.

For the cash the PA 1-8x is good, clarity is on a par with the Strike Eagle (that is its good/usable but not amazing). You are right about the reticles - I MUCH prefer the PA reticle over the Strike Eagle, simple and clear with all the information you need. I find the Strike Eagle too busy and unnatural to use.

For me the PA is a keeper but I still want to try something higher end (like the Sightron 1-7x which I`ve heard good things about or the Trijicon 1-8x) but they are considerably more cash (double or triple the price)

I recently bought a Sightron STAC 3-16x off the EE for similar money to the PA or Strike Eagle and I am blown away by the glass quality and how bright it is. These scopes really punch above their weight and honestly, in my opinion neither the PA or Strike Eagle are in the same league.

It is bigger and heavier but it has way more magnification.

My only gripe is that the reticle is super fine but considering everything else I`d still buy another in a heart beat.
 
I run a 2.5-10 x50mm on some of my hunting rigs. Terrain I hunt (which is also to be considered by the shooter) shots are *usually* 300m or less: maybe even less than that more often than I think lol.

I have practiced a lot this season though out to 600m with my 1-4 & 1-6x so its not too difficult. Bigger challenge is reading unstable / irregular wind at distance.

I have a 2.5-10x40 on the way as well but think I would prefer a bit less magnification for the short distances that deer are found at times out here. Also, bears are active in the area.
 
The Sighton is a lot of Scope. If you google search, there is a review comparing it to the Swarovski 1-6x. And the review is spot on.

It gives up only FOV to the Swaro, and not by much.

Want cheap and good? Buy a Leupold vx2 3-9x40. That scope is the best bang for the buck out there with QUALITY glass.

But if you are set on 1-6/7/8, the SIGHTRON is incredible. It is not 'built to a price point'. But rather well built, and priced accordingly
 
I've been a fan of the 1,5-5x Leupold for years. I think I've got 3 of them and if I had to choose just one scope to hunt with it would be this one. Now, it's not an etched glass or illuminated reticle, but you can get it in the MRT line if you just have to have it. The Mark 8 has the features you want but the price it ridiculous.
