I have a Rem 700 police in 300 Win mag. I have the same in 308. I got a gunsmith to cut down the 308 to 20" and flute the stock barrel. He gave me a great deal so I went that route. The 300 win mag I am setting up for a hunting rifle. I want to rebarrel to a medium contour and flute it with a break. I'll leave this one around 24".
I see many different manufacturers and have read reviews on many on cgn. What do you guys recommend for a stainless blank? I'm not a precision shooter. It won't see 5000 rounds. Any recommendations for the best bang for the buck?

EDIT- I should add... I went this road last year and I messaged jerry at mystic precision. No offense to a guy like jerry, he has my respect. But he asked me several questions to which I did not have the answers to. I will say he lost a sale by not giving me a recommendation. I have a local smith to fit and flute if need be. I just want to know what you guys are buying for such applications.

Thanks

I sent a email to them as I'm looking to get a couple of short barrels made for a couple bolt action SBR projects I had in mind for a long time now

Any of the top barrels makers should work. Personally I'd go 26" and a minimum of a 10 twist to shoot 215 bergers if your planning to shoot long range. The 300 win mag with 215's and H1000 is a perfect match. A 1 in 9.5 may even be better as Berger has changed their recommended twist for the 215. Mine shoots great with a 10 twist at 1500 ft elevation. Depending on your weight goal I'd go #4 or #5 contour. Does your police barrel not shoot? I've heard most are very accurate. Why change it if it shoots good?

I have a few 700P models. All shoot very well with factory barrels. I am looking into weight reduction purposes and figured I would cost out some lighter barrels.
As mentioned, I had a 700P in 308 cut down and fluted when it was brand new. Shoots MOA all day. I haven't weighed it, but it carries very well.
But for the cost, I figured id look into other options.

Thanks all for the recommendations. Ive been looking at costing of some mentioned.

I always try to get a feel for the goals and objectives before making recommendations. In the end, I can supply anything a customer needs/wants... the key is to figure out what will be the best fit for their tasks and budget.

If you prefer to ask my opinion, no problem. Always happy to help... but again, need a direction on what the end use goals will be.

Been there, done that and am working across the entire spectrum of builds...... We have put together "light" hunting rifles that went from 5 lbs to 14lbs.

"Long range" that went from maybe 400yds max to starting at 800yds and heading out towards the mile.

So I try never to guess.....

Hope you find what you need to complete your build. Always new barrels coming in and got some really nice contours that would be ideal for fluting.

Thanks Jerry.
If the problem was with miscommunication, it was most likely due to my ignorance.
Im finding it easier to shop on websites by looking at a list of each available barrel. I believe that is what I was used to while shopping online and maybe where the issue was.
In any case, I have it narrowed down now so I will PM for a price check once I decide.
Thanks again for the reply, I was not trying to take a dig at you, just explaining the confusion.

The range of contour options is staggering and for a novice, overwhelming. I think McGowen offers over 40 contours standard and can custom anything you want. Variations depend on finished lengths and if a muzzle attachment is going on. Then we can add fluting, octagonal and dodecanol, half round/half octagonal, etc, etc, etc.

I tried to list all the possibilities one day and gave up..... just way too many. Now I can offer Carbon Wrapped options so yee ha, even more options to list.... and then there are fabric patterns, cerakote finishes, camo patterns, prefits, etc, etc....

Maybe the right option for your build isn't a fluted steel barrel at all... maybe it would be best served with a CF wrapped one???? no idea but the parts are possible.

I used to send out all sorts of lists and customer feedback was what I expected, still no further ahead on what is the best option... the info was overwhelming. And a list tells you what is onhand, NOT what is possible... and there is far more that can be created. This is the custom rifle business afterall....

If you know what you need, send me the spec and you get a quote promptly... if you don't know what you want, send me the goals and get the solution promptly.

The options are truly mind boggling... with an equally massive range in prices.

So whenever you are ready, just send me your goals and/or barrel specs. There is a very good chance I have it here... and if not, I can certainly have it created.

In NL, options are few as barrel machinists are rare. I have no idea what machining would cost, but I would assume the 700 Police should have a quality barrel and cost wise an option would be to machine the stock barrel. If it shoots well, that is...
