just curious what people think of the current or past remington pump and semi auto rifles. i'm more interested in the higher end ones with the traditional wood and nice look. was wanting something fast handling/firing for use on rabbit primarily. i've heard this new cz512 is also quite nice.

My Remington Pump 572 is a great fast accurate gun.Old world craftsmanship and no plastic.Good quality iron sights ,and it shoots shorts ,longs, quiets, and hyper velocity, in the same magazine as the LR's.The 552 is as equally as nice a gun as well. The older Remmies have always been my favorite firearms. I have more expensive guns but not better ones. They are heirloom quality.I have a newer 597 hb, in the mail from the exchange right now, and hope it works out as well.

I had a Speedmaster when I was a kid, it was my dads.... probably built in the 70's I would think? Great gun.... but seemed to have a weak firing pin. Wish I would of kept it....

I used to own a Rem 742 BDL class semi in 30-06 Sprng.
It had a real 1st generation Colorado made Redfield Widefield 2-7x30mm scope on it.
Looked good and was a real good shooter.
I was the talk of the hunt camp back in the late 60s with such a shooting combo.

I bought a Remington 552 Speedmaster new about 4 years ago. Nothing but good things to say about it. I have put around 500 rounds through it and done nothing more than spray a bit of oil into the action a couple of times and so far not a single let down. In my opinion these are one of the few rifles Remington still does right. When you use it you get that satisfaction that you have a quality rifle in your hands and not a toy. Shure you can buy cheeper rifles but you get what you pay for

Because of its unique bolt system, which allows it to fire L,LR and shorts semi automatically, it tends to get particularly dirty on the bolt face and chamber mouth. Just reach in and wipe out every 100 round or so.

They have great iron "big rifle" sights . When you get bored with shooting gophers with your scoped rifle, load up the speed master with some hollow point shorts and practice stalking up to within 30 yards or so.

Got the browning SA22 ,trigger pull is lousy but it burns through CCI quiets without a miss, loves them. Look at you tube for Rem. Pump problems ,rounds jamming under the ? Shell lifterThey kept having to take out the trigger mech. Not the first time I've seen this problem with the new Remington's. I went for the Henry,no problems and accurate

Just bought a 597 and the trigger is very nice and light.Accurate and reliable.I love Remington's and my pump is reliable as an old fridge. It appears the quality is still there and my new 597 hasn't had a single problem and goes bang every time.

I love the old 12 I've got and recently got a 121 I came across so I could shoot modern cheap HV ammo. The old 12's have lots of warnings around that the metal used for the bolt was not all that tough and should only use standard velocity or more mild ammo. The 121 was an update that uses tougher metal for the bolt and the first one that was OK for the then new HV .22 ammo. So if anyone is looking for Remington pumps keep this in mind.

Another pump option if you run across it that is a great gun is the Rossi copy of the Winchester model 62. They go for prices that are around or a little cheaper than the newer HV ammo safe Remingtons. Got one of those too and it's a great rifle.
