Hi there!

As a project towards my recently completed master's degree, in the winter of 2016 I put up a practical marksman challenge. Despite the incredibly retarded timing of winter in January and February, it had reasonably good participation (250+ people!!) and I thought it was a tonne of fun. Enough fun that I've been recently reminiscing and thought that it would be a great idea to throw it out there again now that summer is here and folks have easier access to the various ranges and secret crown land shooting venues scattered across the country.

So how about the Brobee 2017 Practical Marksman Challenge?

Course of fire as follows:

10 rounds fired from a distance of 100 yards:

  • 2 rounds standing
  • 2 rounds kneeling unsupported
  • 2 rounds sitting unsupported
  • 2 rounds either sitting/kneeling supported, or sitting/kneeling unsupported
  • 2 rounds prone

Target: an 8 inch circle. Downloadable versions you can print off on an 8.5x11 letter paper can be found here.

Scoring criteria:

How many hits do you have on the 8 inch plate?
How long did it take you? (measured between the first rifle report and the last)

How to calculate your score: ((#Hits*100)/(time(seconds)^0.33))*0.5
Or, send me your time and hits, and I will calculate and send your score back to you.

See how well you shoot your rifle relative to others! Post your results in this thread, or if you're embarrassed or just plain value your privacy, please please PLEASE confidentially send me your score & time as well as a few details about your rifle (caliber, action type, sight type) and I will compile a database to generate and share a distribution of all the results submitted. You can also submit your results from the submit page at ww w.rifleman.ca

One of the things I enjoyed the most about my previous challenges was seeing pics of folks with their rifles at their local shooting places. I'll start things off with a submission post of my own....

Thanks a TONNE for your participation! I can't wait to see how other folks do, what types of rifles guys are running, and where they like to shoot.

Cheers,

Brobee

Got out this morning to run me and both my Tikka T3x Arctics through their paces. It was a GOREGOUS morning and the temperature was not yet too hot. My venue was a rancher's pasture not too far from my home, and my backstop was a big hill that is about to be mined out for borrow/fill for use in the construction of a road into a new subdivision. 10 years ago I buried the first pet cat I ever had as an adult...she lived to the age of 22, and we lay her body on a rock at the top of the hill as an offering to the coyotes. So it was a sort of bitter-sweet trip as it's likely the last time I will ever get to shoot there.

Here's my makeshift range, the hill with the topsoil already stripped off her:

And here's some stills from the video I took to keep time:

I did two complete sets with my scoped rifle, and as you can see trying to go fast on the first set cost me TWO MISSES! I slowed down a bit for the second string and I was lucky enough to shoot it clean, but it took me an extra 14 seconds. I measured my time by using the video function on my iPhone, looking at the time code at the sound of the first shot, and same at the last shot . I did not have a prop to use for sitting/kneeling supported, so I just added one round to the sitting & kneeling strings.

After shooting the scoped rifle, I pulled out my Iron Sighted T3x Arctic:

Not as good as with my scoped rifle, but not as bad as I thought and I think I can improve with getting to know the rifle/sights better and a bit more practice. The iron-sighted rifle is certainly more comfortable to shoot, but I just don't see as well through the iron sights as I do through optics. *sigh*...the perils of getting older!!!

Anyway, I had a total blast and can't wait to get out sometime soon for another range session. Hope you all are having a GREAT start to your summer, and hope some of you choose to share bits of your rifle-shooting.

Cheers,

Brobee

Very nice - and great post and pics. You did quite well with the irons I think. I've not shot irons in quite some time preferring optical advantage, but your results are inspiring.

Sitting/Kneeling supported - an example of this would be shooting off a tree stump or over a barricade where the rifle is supported off the prop and you are either sitting or kneeling. As this position is more solid than sitting/kneeling unsupported, feel free to omit this one and replace with an extra round each of sitting & kneeling unsupported.

Prone can be anything you like - unsupported, bag supported, bipod supported - the longer you take to get your position squared will eat away at your score.

Soooooooooo. By ur definition then, is shooting while kneeling with ur elbow rested on ur knee considered unsupported or supported ??

How I think about sitting & kneeling supported vs unsupported:

Sitting & Kneeling Supported - the rifle can rest on something other than your body, i.e. rock, log, fencepost, picnic table, bench...imagine you are out hunting and you have an opportunity where you can sit down and rest the rifle off some part of your environment.

Sitting & Kneeling Unsupported - the rifle can be supported by your arms which are resting on your knees...imagine you are out hunting and the terrain is such that you can sit or kneel however there is nothing to rest your rifle on.

A sling would also count as supported, IMO. I had assumed that Brobee had not intended for people to be shooting up against a tree/post etc.

Isn't the kneeling supported supposed to be off a stump?

How I think about sitting & kneeling supported vs unsupported:

Sitting & Kneeling Supported - the rifle can rest on something other than your body, i.e. rock, log, fencepost, picnic table, bench...imagine you are out hunting and you have an opportunity where you can sit down and rest the rifle off some part of your environment.

Sitting & Kneeling Unsupported - the rifle can be supported by your arms which are resting on your knees...imagine you are out hunting and the terrain is such that you can sit or kneel however there is nothing to rest your rifle on.

So yes, either sitting or kneeling supported could be done from a tree stump.

I'll have to try this. Unfortunately I can't post photos

If you do try the challenge and have some photos you'd like to share (which I would LOVE to see!), send me a PM and I'll share my email or txt/msg coordinates so I can host them for you on my server.

Cheers,

Brobee

Haha..... I remember this challenge...... I totally nailed it on the first try with my ruger scout with the ten round mag and walked around for a week like my shyte didn't stink.....

Then I proceeded to soil the bed with my 223, dropping rounds in the snow, accidentally flopping the floor plate on my rifle and chasing rounds as they slid across the ice crust..... Good times.....
