Just wondering if anyone knows if in Alberta you can hunt with a short barrel shotgun for example a norinco with 12" barrel for let's say grouse or have slugs loaded for deer, and would it matter if it's a pistol grip shotgun.. Don't plan on hunting this way just curious..

You can hunt with any non restricted firearm presuming you are following your provincial laws.

Example..In Ontario you can't have slugs in your gun during an open big game season without the appropriate tag. Not sure how it works for ya out West. A quick read of the regs or a member from Alberta should be able to clear that up.

It might save you time and money if you have paperwork showing that the 12 incher is a NR. Not all LEO's and CO's know all the rules. And after all, to many, it looks like a sawed off shotgun, not a hunting firearm.

I have never seen any provincial regulations that specify what furniture or barrel length is require/prohibited for hunting.

Ammo yes. Calibre/gauge yes. Class yes. Muzzle Energy yes. But not barrel length.

Just be aware that a short barrel shotgun with a pistol grip would likely be under 660mm. Manufactured that way, its NR. Configured by you and its probably restricted/prohibited. You would have to be prepared to substantiate the class of firearm to any Conservation Officer of LE you encounter.

True, in northern Ontario. Southern Ontario you may carry a shotgun loaded with slugs whenever.

You can likely use that shorty for hunting, but why would you? Have you shot much with that short barrel? Most people tend to hit more moving targets when using a longer barrel....

If the total length of your shotgun is 26" or more, you should be good, as mentioned check with your local hunting regs..

in BC you can't hunt with a pistol

Handgun – is a firearm that is designed,
altered or intended to be aimed and fired by
the action of one hand or that has a barrel less
than 305 mm (12 in.) in length.

That's from the BC hunting regulations? So as far as they are concerned anything with a barrel less than 12" is a no-no for hunting?

Good to know. Thanks.

Not true. You may not have slugs in your gun well the controlled hunt is underway unless you were part of the hunt . Got draw for the hunt.

Correct, in BC you can't hunt with a shotgun that has a barrel length less than 12". I have a few Fabarm 11" Pistola models and I can't use them. Not even with the 3+" screw-on choke (unless it's permanently attached). I've been over this extensively with my local CO, who took it to his supervisor to confirm. He told me to keep my 11" for "defensive" use only while out there.

I have had my 12" sxs out lots and it also was carried as a camp gun on a sheep hunt. Just pattern the gun with a few different loads and practice. (Skeet is fun but very loud- the others move back) Good luck.
