First 22 - what to get?

One word...Zastava. Try out the mp22 close to Cz build quality at savage prices...all wood and steel..

I have not held the .22, but the Zastava .22 mag is about as rough as a Norinco for $100.00 more. I have a Zastava M-57 and the workmanship is amazing; the Zastava .22 mag was a letdown quality wise. They look nice in the promo pictures:

They aren't very nice at all. Not sure why anyone would want one.

Zastava 22 mag in picture. Metal work is as good or better than anything else on the market currently. Mags can be a bit finicky.

I wasn't using it much so a long time friend of mine now has it. I was always worried about banging the stock on something when I had it out. They are a really accurate rifle in 22 LR or 22 mag.I know they come in 17 HMR as well but don't know anyone who owned one. This one likes the 30 gn V max.
Scott...

If the brand new ones in the stores looked that good, I would have a totally different opinion.

I guess I got lucky then...I have the earlier Rem model 5 with a laminated stock and a newer 22 mag, both are brilliant shooters with no issues whatsoever.

For under $300 I'd say go for the Remington 597. I don't own one personally but have shot with them before and no complaints. I do intend to pick one up eventually, I just bought a bunch of Cooey's and a 10/22 takedown first.
However, another gun you don't have posted that I would recommend is the Norinco JW-20, which is a knock-off of the Browning SA-22. I picked one up off the EE and for the $140 I paid for it, I love it. Welcome, and happy hunting!

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone. I think I'm going to have to hold a few of the guns mentioned and see how they feel in my hands. I will definitely post a reply with what I decide, though it might be a while since I am still waiting for my Pal to come in through the mail.

For me, advice I give to everyone for a first gun purchase is:
1) Do your homework while you are waiting,
2) Shoot as many as you can before you buy, if possible,
3) Don't over think it.

No ones first gun is their last gun. The goal in choosing a first gun is not to buy the perfect gun so that you never need another. Its impossible anyways. All you have to do is make sure you don't buy a gun that you end up hating.

Like the others said try out as many as you can. Dont settle get what you want.

May i suggest a savage Mark II F or G model. They are light weight, very accurate and have excellent service here in Canada. I had one i was getting light strikes with that had been around the block quite a few times. I sent it to Savage in ontario and they fixed it right up and included a free magazine. They are low cost and make great plinkers and do as well as more expensive rifles when scoped. Unfortunatly i swapped mine but promise myself i will get another.

Other then that i have a pair of 10/22s which are more or less factory with upgraded sights and internals.
They are for sure my favorites i dont have heavy barrels i like a rifle i can shoot on the range and carry around the field one handed.
Also what i like about 10/22s is parts are everywhere!
