Ballistic Vest - on the range?

Sasktel power?
Sorry, LOL it's one or the other.

As an aside, I couldn't wait to dump my LBV and frag vest. I pesonally wouldn't wear that to a civilian range. However if it makes you feel safer what the hell, go for it.

Yeah for some reason or another I can't type worth #### on this new phone and it doesn't help that I have the intelligence of a 10 year old.

This reminds me of people wearing full nomex suits/shoes/gloves for casual lapping days at the race track (only a helmet is actually required)...I fully approve!! If you own the safety gear why on earth wouldn't you wear it? A fire, like a ricochet, doesn't care if its a causal practice day. I overhear people mocking those who arrive in full nomex for a lapping day and just can't understand it. A casual lapping day doesn't mean casual fires if there were an accident. I don't own body armour and probably never will, but Id never look twice at someone wearing it at the range as its the same principle.

Guess this a safety equipment question that I already know the answer to. Of course I wear eye and ear protection on the range - not because it's required - but because it's right. Not sure why I haven't been wearing my vest on range days, but..... well, I'm going to start. Something tells me I'm way more likely to get shot on the range than on duty.

Gee, Rob... great post. Just the kind of thing the anti's love. Makes us all look like idiots. Thanks, thank a lot.

For the record, I've been to many ranges across Canada (and the US) and I've never felt in any kind of danger what-so-ever.

..... at a competition no less. Lost control of his gun and shot himself in the torso - dead. No way that loss of control could have hit someone else right?

For some reason I've been thinking about this again and dug out this thread. My wife asked me why I don't wear any at the range and I told her it was stupid. But she's not wrong when she says it only takes 1 idiot so maybe some soft armour under a shirt or hoodie isn't a terrible idea.

If you're wearing body armour on the off chance you might take one to the torso, then what do you have on your noggin? That's a pretty vital area for most of us anyway lol. If I thought a couple of hours at the range was that big of a roll of the dice, I'd just go elsewhere.

way to say "HEY CFO COME CLOSE DOWN MY RANGE IT IS UNSAFE!!!!"

Whats unsafe about wearing a vest? lol, ridiculous comment. Makes no sense. I might do it on outside range, but indoor range is already a little cramped and uncomfortable.

In case they fall in the hole, obviously. I am for wearing whatever you like though.

Actually, I know a guy who went through someone else's previous hole. The top inch had frozen back over and it had snowed. Luckily he had a set of picks and someone with him that day. He now wears a survival suit when he ice fishes.

To the OP, if you come to my range you can wear a clown costume if you want. It is no business or concern of mine what you wear to the range, nor your reason behind wearing it.

The ideas that I have found myself disagreeing with on this thread include..

"No point in wearing a vest because your head is still exposed". Even worth commenting on? Almost every LEO and ACC in the entire world does this...work boots too, and gloves, and glasses..all safety devices that don't also protect the head.

"Idiots wear body armour to the range" If you wear body armour everyday at work, where 99.9% of the time no one is shooting, why would you be an idiot to wear it a the range where everyone is shooting?.

"Body armour guys are wanna-bes" Well this could very likely be true but even if the guy likes playing dress up why the hell should I care? Has no effect on me, any more than cowboy shooters dressing up, CQB guys, or civil war re-enactment, or the guy wearing the Sidney Crosby jersey. Granted it can seem a little over the top at times lol!

"I've never seen anyone get shot in 20 years at the range so no 'need' to wear a vest". The good old 'need' angle. 99.9% of LEO and ACC don't need it either, til they do.

^^^^ this about sums it up. It's a free country...still. Do what you want.
Whoever wants to wear armor has the right and choice to do so. Whoever wants to snicker and roll their eyes has the right to do so. As long as the 2 don't cross, then all is good.

If you have body armour, you may as well use it at the range. It is bought and paid for.
What scares me is that, although I can fit an extra trauma plate in the front, I cannot fit a second one in back. As of late I have taken to duct-taping a second trauma plate to the area of my back where the heart and vital organs are located. Then I put my vest on.

Wha...?

Do you work in Mosul?

I think this is going to be a fun thread...wish I had some pictures to illustrate my feelings....;)

Here ya go...
