IDF M14 Completed Rifles Picture and Range Report Thread

OK...my barrel vice/receiver wrench and other tools finally arrived, so I got busy!
For this build I used most of the IDF parts from this kit with a few up-grades...

Here are the details on this rifle:

2007 Norinco M305 Receiver.
IDF Heavy Barrel kit, SAK NM marked barrel. Throat and muzzle erosion both gauged at "0"...yahoo!
SA Bolt lapped to 1.632" head space...good contact on both lugs.
HRA op-rod...dropped right in with no fitting.
Aftermarket “match” op-rod spring guide installed.
Op rod guide epoxied in place with new roll pin.
TRW IDF trigger...disassembled, cleaned, lubed and reassembled...very nice.
Flash hider...commercial/aftermarket, NM reamed.
NM front and rear sights.
Gas system shimmed.

This thing rings like a bell (PING!) and the action cycles very smoothly.
I made it to the range again today and fired some groups with iron sights at 100 yards using Nosler factory 168g match ammo.
I'm very happy with the results to say the least. All the groups fired from this build have been exceptional so far...I'm super impressed with how well this rifle shoots!
I will scope this rifle soon and we'll see what she can really do...

Thanks to John (M14 Medic) for the recent advice/tips and also to 45ACPKING and Tactical Teacher for sharing their knowledge over the years!
(And to Mr. Wolverine & Co. for bringing these kits in!)

You are very welcome, sir...

Also I have to post a shout-out to John (Mr. Wolverine) for his tenacity (and Advils) getting these IDF M14 USGI parts kits to us. They are a once - in- a-lifetime acquisition (well, twice for me  )

Those of you in the GTA area have any projects, come on by, and let's get your build going!

Didn't I tell y'all that we have a shztload of experience here on CGNutz? I'm humbled and honore'd to be at yer service....

Cheers,
Barney

Thanks CeeJay. I thought I just got lucky the first time at the range, but the rifle keeps shooting this well...I'm very happy. Build #2 coming soon!

Finally took my rifle out to the range. Cold, windy and wet, but better than working.
Norinco reciever
TRW bolt
Winchester barrel
HR, Winchester trigger group
USGI fibreglass stock
The rest of the parts are unmarked USGI
ARMS #18 scope base, some old Burris Signature rings and a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12 AO scope
Load was 41grains H4895 in Israeli surplus cases with a Sierra 168 HPBT and CCI 34 primers
Functions fine with the reloads. Cases headspace measure at 1.6305"
10 shots in 2 inches. Could probably do better but it was fun anyway.

I had one of these. Two things to be aware of.

1. Push the switch in to rotate it! I broke mine within 30min of installing it (pot metal cr.p). Installation instructions did not explain this.

2. That switch is pretty intrusive on the charging handle and your right hand. I got tired to racking my finger knuckle (read bleed here) on it and replaced the switch with a cap screw.

M

I would also add that the screw seen in the pic that goes into the stock is crap, and will strip on you very easily. That stock is solid wood, and the screw is not strong. You can see the threads starting to give on that pic.

Made it to the range with the IDF standard barrel build.

2007 Norinco receiver.
TRW Barrel. Throat erosion measures less than zero, so basically a "new" barrel. Muzzle erosion is also in the "new" range...lucky me!
Winchester bolt. It headspaced at 1.634" with basically no lapping. Lug contact is good.
Winchester op rod. Very minor fitting required.
H&R trigger.
Gas system shimmed.
Op rod guide is solid.
NM op rod spring guide.
I added NM front and rear sights.
Bolt, flash hider, op rod, and trigger all have 866 stamped on them from the IDF.

The rifle shot well with Norinco, IVI and Hirt surplus ammo...The Norc and IVI shot to the same POI, the Hirt was hotter for sure and hit about 2" higher.

Here's the rifle.

Here's my LRB / IDF heavy build

Here's my first build using an LRB receiver and an IDF heavy kit. The bolt is well lapped, and the head space is less than 1/1000 over. Initially, she was hand tight at 22 degrees and would not index properly, so I had to take off about 0.0007 from the shoulder to bring it down to about 16 degrees.

The target was shot at 50yds with cheap rounds, and 50Yr+ old eyes, so I'm not too bummed out at the results for a Kent State Hippie Rake.

My next build will be an LRB M25 with a Criterion barrel.

That is a fantastic looking rifle sir, great shooting too. Are you going to leave it as is, or put a scope on it?

I sent mine in to M14medic as it needed to have the shoulder set back so the bolt would go into battery, probably going to have to have the Chamber re cut but that will mean a nice right match chamber when I get it back!! Then I just have to find some time to put it together and roll up some loads to test fire and get her out shooting :) getting excited!!

Thank ya sir, I have ordered a scope mount for it. That and some SMK loads should yield some decent groups I think. Will also think about bedding it at some point as it's not really a tight fit in the Boyd's stock.

Cheers, Tom

Here is mine:

Norinco receiver stamped P1415** M305 Cal 7.62
TWR light barrel dated 4 63, throat erosion 1.5
H&R bolt and op rod matched #750 by IDF headspaced @ 1.635 and no filing required on op rod.
H&R trigger group with Winchester hammer
Basset Machine hi mount and Weaver medium 49041 rings secure the Bushnell Elite Tactical 10 x 40 mm. Wouldn't want to go any lower with the IDF bubba hump riser.

A shout out to John from M14 Medic Firearms for pulling the wrenches on this build.

It was too windy on the bald a$$ prairies to do much more than the M14 25 meter battle zero target. But this rifle sure looks promising.

Welp just recvied this pretty girl back from Jonh at m14 medic firearms. Just want to say thanks for the wonderful work.Took it out this afternoon with a vortex 1-4 mounted. Fired a few 3 round groups at 100 yards with some norinco 7.62 and some federal 7.62 3 rounds with norc 7.62. 3 rounds with federal 7.62. I ended up leaving my shooting rest at home im sure the groups could of been better with it. Rather then shooting off the Wal-Mart bag filled with sand wrapped in my hoody. Overall couldn't be happier with the finished rifle.
Happpy Shooting everyone!

Finally got this project completed! Has a throat erosion of 1 with 90%+ bolt lug contact on both lugs. Stock is bedded and gas system laser unitized. Refinished and engraved Chicom receiver along with the rest of the IDF parts with a gorgeous Black Oxide finish. Shout out's go to M14 Medic for the fresh from Wolverine assembly, bedding and accurizing which inspired me to go with the full restore so it was then sent off to Nick at Vulcan Gun for the engraving and metal repair work as well as some other odds and ends thanks to Canada Post's rough handling of the package! Couldn't be happier with the way this turned out. The pictures do it no justice. Very excited to get this out to the range later today hopefully and get that Zeiss Conquest HD sighted in. Certainly not a cheap project but this will no doubt be an heirloom firearm which will be staying in the family from now on!

That is a beauty!! what did you get engraved on the heel?

IMG_1563.jpg

Kept it clean and simple! I debated going with the LRB but for the price difference I got it bedded engraved and refinished the entire rifle, I think its a good tradeoff if money was no object tho I may have swung for the LRB.
