10/22 barrel length question

Anyone have any strong opinions about 12.5 Inch barrels?

I'll be ordering a 10/22 and I'm leaning towards this length over the 16“ just for the weight and smaller form factor convenience.

Im concerned about taking too much of a performance hit since I want to use it to practice my shooting technique and eliminate bad habits. I want to be sure poor groups are mostly my fault.

Googling leads me to believe that while I may not achieve full velocity for the round, the accuracy should be fine.

If you want to work on technique maybe a bolt action will be a better route. I always find myself shooting too fast with a semi auto 22, not to mention 10/22s are not the most accurate rifle out of the box. I shoot a lot of gophers, used semi autos and bolt actions. Generally I shoot better with the bolt action.

You are correct that barrel length will effect velocity on a bullet, a longer barrel will get more ft/s up to a certain length so you might loose 20-80 ft/s out of a short barrel depending on the bullet.

I am doing a custom build right now with a Dlask 12.5 SR22 barrel.
(Testing it today after work)
This build is for steel challenge, so reliability trumps accuracy for me.
I will let you know how that works out and try to take some pictures. (Will be sighting in at only 50 yards though)

I don't think you'll see as much of a difference as you think I think the person behind the trigger and the ammo used will make a bigger difference.
 
I run a 8" and a 18" barrels and there is no real noticeable difference in accurate.
You spoke to velocity and even there when talking 22's the difference is so minuscule it's not even worth discussing.
Google a web site called accuracy by the inch and you can see the difference in velocity from 2" all the way up to like 28" in 1" steps.

I've been using a savage mark 2 until recently. Been wanting to get a Dar22 for a while. Hopefully it will shoot better than a stock 10 22.

True that the bolt is good for practice but I'm not looking to reset npoa after every shot anymore.

I will be interested in your results, Joka.

I considered the sr22 barrel but I think I'll go with the bull.

My first 10/22 was a DAR-22 with 12.5" bull barrel. It was very accurate. You can achieve great accuracy with any 10/22 barrel length, my 6" McGowen barreled 10/22 is very accurate. The biggest change you will notice with shorter barrels is noise. The short barrels are much louder - not an issue if you are shooting at the range with hearing protection, but a serious consideration for a hunting rifle.

In my experience, the most important feature for maximum accuracy and maximum reliability is not barrel length (I have 10/22 barrels from 6" - 20") or barrel weight (ie: sporter vs mid weight vs bull barrel) but it is the chamber design that, to a large extent, determines accuracy and reliability. I have tried McGowen (Bentz chamber), Green Mountain (Bentz chamber), Dlask (Sporter chamber), Dlask (Xtreme chamber), Adaptive Tactical (Bentz chamber), Volquartsen (propritary chamber) and Kidd (propritary chamber). I have found the Kidd chamber to offer the best accuracy combined with excellent reliability, the various Bentz chambers have all offered very good accuracy and great reliability, while the Dlask Sporter offers excellent reliability but average accuracy and the Dlask Xtreme offers very good accuracy at the expense of reliability. YMMV

ps: if I could only have one 10/22 it would have a Kidd barrel.
 
I heard a 22lr needs 14 inches to get full velocity.
If that number is correct, that would be my minimum.
For my one and only 10/22 build, I chose a used 20 inch threaded KIDD barrel.
