Hey all. I have a new Ruger Precision Rifle in 223rem, so I'm in the market for a decent quantity of good long range target bullets. I have 30pcs of the Hornady 75gr Amax.

Is there a good buy for a good bullet somewhere? Best value for a quality heavy bullet, available in 500-1000pc quantity?

You can pick up the 75gr hornady Bthp match in a 600 piece bulk box, I think it was $120.

That's what I shoot in my Remmy 700. But the $120 for 600 is going back a few years... $159-170 these days.

Like the Canada Ammo guy said on one of his threads, the days of cheap ammo are over. That seems to be the case for reloading as well. Not saying there aren't deals to be had, you just have to find them.

BTW, sometimes online pricing looks good, untill you factor in the shipping.

Hopefully your gun likes the bullet you buy - personally, i would shoot it first before buying a pile...
My 223 (1:7) really likes 80 smk's, and 90 Bergers. The 80 SMK is the almost identical to a 308 trajectory, maybe even a bit flatter

I once ran a 20 round test at 1000 yards with Sierra 155s (in a 308) and Sierra 80s (in a 223) on the same target face. I did not adjust sights over each string. The 80s did not have quite as much drift as the 155s. Group heights were about the same, but the 80 group was a bit narrower. Launch velocity was about the same - 3,000 fps (30" barrels)

I ended up with 500pcs of the 80gr ELD-M. I'm going to hold off on a larger order until I confirm that they are good to go in my rifle. If they aren't great I'll still use them for training and can probably sell some locally.

Higgingson Powders sells the new Hornady ELD-Match 75 gr and 80 gr (#22791/#22831) for $31.91/100 and Hornady 75 gr BTHP Match for $158.93/600
