Unimog 406

Thanks for all the replies, as I said I am working through a full service and getting her road ready. I am finding lots a annoying little problems as although she has a very low number of hours, sadly she has been neglected. First priority is to have up up and working on a snow blade before winter, then next year I may consider a re-spray job.

I went into town to register her to day and staying true to form even that didn't work out! After 1 1/2 hours the computer refused to accept her entry so it was written out by hand and I have to go back again when they can complete it. It has taken 7 months from purchase in UK to delivery and registration in Canda, I have completed this process with machine guns in less time. :)

Had a similar issue with my Iltis....system wouldn't take the VIN...had to get a dealer to "verify" the pin. My Pinzgauer, which wasn't made in Canada...was no problem at all...go figure

Be careful, prolonged high speed use pumps the portal axle gearbox into the main tube. I have an aftermarket "manifold" piping assembly that mounts to the hubs to fix it. I also have brand new door rubber for a 406. Leftover parts from my old unit. PM me if you're interested. Cheaper to get the proper piping installed than to rebuild a portal.

Yes I have read of this happening, but I would like to have "prolonged high speed" defined. I am certainly interested in your parts, please e-mail me at John@wolverinesupplies.com as my PMs are disabled. Thanks.

Worked on a few when I was at a Freightliner dealership.Benz seems to always have the parts you just have to wait and mortgage your house to pay for them. A full set of manuals is a must--Dieseldog!

Nice, Michelin XML or XZL Tires? 3 way Kipper bed, 20 speed cascade trans, front pto , are the hydraulics there? Pintle hitch, and rear hydraulics?

XZL tyres, 3 way bed but no Hydralic cylinder, I will have to keep an eye out for one. Yes, 20 speed cascade box and front (only) PTO. Full hydralics front and rear. NATO pintal hitch.

Servicing is slow, 3 steps forward and then 2 back, due to rusted bolts, lines, pipes and fittings, lots to learn. Well engineered but everything is packed into a very tight space. Overall she is living up to my expectations, it will be very interesting to see how she will push snow with a 10 ft blade. I can't fit tyre chains to the front as with the oversize tyres they would catch the Hydralic lines but I think I will fill the box with a row of concreat railroad ties, that should make her sit up! :)

I put 15.5 tire on mine on stock rims. Had to bend the steps back a little, everything else fit. Find some disc brake rims, that will give you much needed offset it might clear your chains.

I know this is not a firearms topic but those people that know me realize that I enjoy playing with track layers, tractors etc. my latest toy is a 1983 Unimog 406, purchased in the UK I have only had her for a few weeks. She needs a lot of TLC, the previous owners have not been kind to her! She has a straight six diesel Mercedes engine, starts right up, only 1408 hours on her, 85 HP, 20 gear, gear box, 4x4 with diff locks, hydraulics and air, not air conditioning but air assisted brakes. Slowly working through a full service and then fitting her with a 10 ft Anderson Hydralic snow plough. She is not fast or quiet but I like her, going to have some fun with her. :)

Anyone reading this who has owned one or worked on one I would be interested in exchanging info.

Just after unloading in my yard.

Standing in the rain in the UK before loadin.

Very cool pics! Thank's John....:)

Awesome list of alll the good ingredients. DIN front plate, and you can mount a Schmidt plow or blower. Nice find!!!!

What is a new unit worth? I even saw one with a back hoe att. and 3 point hitch in the rear.
my late father would have loved these had they been around when he worked in a lumber camp
during the second world war. May I ask what kind of dollar one like yours is worth?
cheers Zig

The backhoe and front end loaders are the 419 SEE units. Lots on American government auctions. I think much heavier frame and stiffer suspension than a typical mog

I have the A frame (propped against the wall in the second photo) that attaches to the DIN plate this will have my Anderson snow plouh mounting brackets welded to it so it is quick detach. She will be raised and angled using the two hydraulic valves on the Unimog.

There have been several questions on cost and value, two different figures in my opinion. Cost as she is shown in the photos was $12,500.00, total landed in Canada just under $20,000.00, that includes 50% of the container cost (There were 2 vehicles in it) professional washed in UK, export licences, import brokerage fees etc. Now as to value, when I have finished my extensive service so everything is working correctly. (I found out last night I need a need air switch for the 4x4 and diff locks.) and with the dedicated snow plough. Original engine hours are believed to be 1400, which is nothing so I would value her between $30 and $40,000.00 but I have no plans to sell her.

I am glad to know that when I spend my money at Wolverine it goes to buy something cool.

If you bought a minivan I would have to take my dollars elsewhere.
