Weatherby Vanguard 2 Detachable mag and advice

I just did a population control hunt with an out of the box Lazerguard and 4.5-14 x 50VX3 LR scope with illuminated B&C reticle. Despite rain and shooting it until branding iron hot the little Vanguard never missed a beat, handling zero to 700 yard duty like a real trooper.

The most expensive Vanguards are still very affordable. The plainer ones are downright inexpensive for what you're getting. Just buy a new one and get the warranty and accuracy guarantee instead of risking getting someone else's headache and being on your own.

Thinking of purchasing a Weatherby Vanguard in .270. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on these rifles?
Also thinking if I do purchase it I may want to swap out the bottom metal. It has the DBM (detachable box mag) kit from legacy, But I think I would prefer the clean line of the hinged floorplate. Would there be anyone out there with a long action Hinged floorplate they would want to part with? Perhaps even trade for the DBM kit?

It's possible. Buy the rifle and advertise WTT the Legacy detach mag kit for the original magazine parts and you'll find out eventually. Meanwhile, live with the rifle as is.

You've already asked the seller if they have the original parts to convert it back?

If I wanted a detachable mag for a long action Vanguard I'd buy this.

The mag setup is all steel and hard to distinguish from a floorplate when in the rifle.

The plastic version currently offered is hideous. Looks worse than a Tikka actually.

That does look like a much better option. Wish I'd have known about it before I got the plastic version. You're quite correct, the plastic set up isn't exactly  'the cutest thing on the block'. Oh well, I've got it now, ;) for the time being anyway.

I have an S2 in 270 Win with the DBM as well. I probably have the hinged floorplate lying around somewhere and would be willing to part with it. I'll take a look.

Absolutely love the rifle. My only qualms regarding the DBM is where the release is at. I haven't lost a mag yet, but could see it easily happening. But I wouldn't go back to the floorplate. I get in and out of the truck alot, and having to load and unload one with the floorplate is a pain compared to popping out a magazine.

I also don't love the stock. It's ok mind you, and I never noticed it affect the accuracy. And it's nice not caring if you scrape it up. But I upgraded to a Bell & Carlson and haven't looked back.

You and me both! I took your lead and bought an olive green (with black web) B&C sporter stock from Prophet River as there's no tax and shipping on purchases right now. The Howa's deep semi-gloss bluing, quality all steel construction and smooth action make this rifle amoung one of my favourite shooters in my collection, but I just couldn't live with that stickly lint collector Hogue stock! It shoots very well in 6.5x55 (so the stock works), but I just couldn't stand the feel and look. Personally, I think the factory Howa 1500 plastic stocks are better than the Hogue atrocities--even with the funky colours and patterns!

As for hinged floor plate vs plastic mag--stay with the steel floor plate. Much nicer to handle and carry. It also looks better IMHO.

If you're looking for a Howa, Prophet River has a huge selection!!!

I put 2 of the B&C stocks on a pair of Vanguard's...one on the 243 one on the 257. The rest have S1 or S2 hard plastic stocks...as long as the barrel channel bedding is even, and it rarely is, these will hold zero and shoot well until you can't touch the barrel. Usually the problem with the S1/S2 stocks is they are folded/molded a bit off center, so one side sits higher. Sandpaper and a dowel, and about 5mins work sort that out.

...and what is your impression of your B&C stocks?

I'd outfit all 5 of the rifles with B&C if I could afford it. I'm also anxiously awaiting the new "sporter" version for these rifles.... will put one on my 6.5x55 or 7mm.

I had a 270 Vanguard with the detachable magazine, my preference is a hinged floor plate but to try and shave some weight I bought the mag kit, you wont have too many problems getting someone to trade you on the EE. Good rifles with or without the magazine, just a little heavy for me.

I ordered the sporter version today for my 6.5x55. All stoked. I might buy another Howa 1500 in 7mm-08. :)

Let us know what you think of it once you get a chance to shoot it with the new stock.
The sporter looks more comfortable to me then the MC style, but that might just be my preference.

I also have a factory MC walnut stock that I bought off EE. It has some handling/hunting marks, but its in decent condition. I don't much like its lines. It'll probably just sit and dust collect now that I have the B&C on order.

I just picked up a Vanguard 2 DBM in .270 yesterday. Haven't taken it out yet. But I wish there were more mags available in stock. I can't find any long action mags anywhere.

Got the stock on Tuesday, but have yet to install it. It is definitely an upgrade! Very nice quality and seems quite light, especially compared to the walnut stocks. I think I'll put my walnut and Hogue on EE soon! :)

I seem to have misplaced by torx set! Do you recall what size? Is it T25?
