1. Any suggestions re: tactical shooting friendly ranges on Vancouver Island, esp. close to Victoria?
2. Also interested in ranges with normal membership policies without extreme/ strange hierarchical structures and crazy rules
3. Also interested in crown lands to go and shoot rifles
4. Also interested in making friends in tactical shooting/ crown land shooting on Vancouver Island

Thanks!

My experience is limited to the mid / south island only but here I go:

1/. Victoria / Nanaimo / Comox / Campbell River. Not sure about Parksville / Port Alberni. The first 4 have divisions that are IPSC leaning. 3 gun is getting popular.
2/. Hard to answer that one, each one has its rules and member's so only you can judge that one for sure. Everyone has had a bad experience at some stage, but all the clubs have plenty of members so it cannot be that bad?
3/. Vancouver Island is unique in that it has a large proportion of private land running from Victoria to Campbell River, east side. From Victoria, head west coast and the further north the less folk you'll encounter.
4/. Likely that will start at the club.

I think you are looking at a membership at Victoria R&G, start there and see what the others have to offer over time. Comox is, IMHO, the best appointed. It has a world class setting, and plenty of space so the ranges are really good. The sporting clays there is a must.

I hope this helps.

Candocad.

Thanks Candocad,

any specific ranges/ courses to mention?
Victoria R+G= is Victoria rod and gun? Cannot find it-found North Saanich R+G (rod+Gun) and Victoria fish and game

Thanks a lot!

I shoot in the bush, ( Jordan river ). I have my own target stands and plates, best investment you can make. ;)

Ranges around here suck big time.

Annnnd there you have it!

LoL, to be fair, if you like to shoot your rifle sitting on your butt . Vic fish and game is perfect...lol.. They do have some single bay pistol ranges but its only 25yards

Where do you shoot the P320?

I dont around here :-( , I got the SIG Sauer P320 CO2 Pistol when Im in the bush. That way I can practice my transition work without the jail time... hahahhaah and I get 30 rounds... hahahahhaahha

I actually have more fun when I head out to the bush, I make a day of it with the wife and kids.

The only time I have fun at ranges around here is when I go shoot trap. They have a very nice setup in Parksville.

we have to connect, big time:)
I also do not get an idea of shooting the rifles (except bolt/ sighting) while sitting on a butt-just cannot get it
Rifle= move
Handgun= move

I'm not sure exactly what you call "tactical" shooting but most ranges will accept you if you handle your guns safely. It's when people sweep each other, damage range equipment, break range rules and shoot over berms that range operators get upset... unless the place is run by Fudds! I'm President in Port Alberni but shoot at many of the ranges around the Island. What exactly are you wanting to do?

 There's no rules about standing or shooting prone on the VFGPA rifle range...

I have heard similar comments from others like this though, and I wonder if the club has recently had rule changes or something? I've only been a member for the past year and a half so maybe it was different before. Or maybe I am missing something. You can do pretty much whatever the heck you want at the multipurpose range as long as it's safe.

Tactical- is when the range is set up in a way that you may move towards the targets and not stand on a firing line doing transitions only.
Obviously, when you are doing it, either nobody is shooting or the range is set-up in a narrow 100 yard corridor-like way (with high piles of soil on left/ right):

VFGPA has a multipurpose range that is divided up into multiple bays with side berms that you can do what you're wanting. The distance is limited...but...you can always shoot smaller targets? They are currently building more bays with up to 50y. To some extent you have to work with what you've got. I'd like my own restricted 1000m range in my backyard with props and a multitude of expensive steel targets. Wish in one hand....well, you know the rest.

Have you tried 3 gun yet? Unless it's some intense course with Travis Haley or something, I think competition is going to be hard to beat for training under stress. Shoot by yourself in the bush all you want, but you won't ever really know what you are or aren't capable of without the introduction of stress. IMHO.

The moment the timer beeps, the stress starts and the memory forgets.

no haven't yet. but I agree, need to try an intense course. is Travis teaching in VancIsland too?

No...sorry. That's kind of my point. There is no tactical shooting courses or opportunities on the island regularly. IMO, your best bet is to take up 3-gun and airsoft. Not joking either....I think airsoft is tops for force-on-force.

Victoria fish and game is opening up a 50 yard bay in the future. And outside of a holster course before use, it's not too restrictive. My suggestion is get 22lr or 9mm pcc AR's and use 25 yard bays. Then you can shoot for cheap and lots of fun close up drills.

Basically control muzzle, don't shoot cheap steel, and you can have a lot of fun.

Pm if you're heading up, always up there. Have a good kit of 22lr comp/tact stuff (AR, Scar, pistols)
