Magnum primers?

I have lots of LR primers and don't really want to "order in" a thousand LRM primers just for one rifle. Are they a NEED? or a NICE TO HAVE?

If it matters, the rifle is a .300 H&H and I will be using N160, H4831 and Hybrid 100V powders.

I would. That is a lot of powder to be using a regular primer.

If in doubt, go with what the manual says.

You don't have to order by the 1000....Xreload sells them by the 100.
You will want to order some brass or bullets to make it worthwhile.

I use standard large rifle primers in both 300wm and 458 wm. I've never had an issue

For those particular powders I would check what the manual says. For some powders magnum primers are 100% required, for others it depends on the amount of powder in the case, but a 300H&H is kind of a big case for normal primers. I'm fairly certain the manual will say to use magnum, and although the ammo will usually go "bang" everytime with a normal primer, if you measure the velocity you'll always be lower than the published data, and accuracy can also suffer. You might even get some unburnt powder.

Magnum are usually the same price or only marginally more expensive than non-magnum. Around 4-5¢ each, which is negligible on the total cost of a 300H&H round imho. If you don't want to pay shipping cost for only 100 primers (paying 15$ shipping for a 4$ item isn't my idea of fun either), sometimes cabella makes "everything ships for free" event, and then you can order primers per 100 instead of per 1000. They're kind of expensive but if you need only 100 or 200 it's a good way to get them.

You can also use mag primers in non-mag cartridges... pretty much all I use regardless of what I'm loading for.

The companies manufacture alternate primers for a good reason so always follow what the reloading manuals suggest. You are reloading at your own peril if you do not.

Got brass. Got bullets. Got powder. Got dies. I had no magnum rifles so just traded away a thousand Mag primers; guess I may have to see if he still has them.

I'm not sure which cartridge you've reloaded with mag primers (and which brand of magnum primers), but I tried a 44 magnum with tightgroup with both magnum and non-magnum primers (book says to use normal), and the difference is obvious. With a normal primer, it's a soft 44mag load. With a magnum primer, you get a fast overpressure and the bullet doesn't stabilize.

The idea that a 9mm with 4grn or so of tightroup should be primed with a magnum primer is ridiculous. It might not make much difference for large rifle cartridge, but for some calibre it does make a difference, and a huge one.

Well we are talking about a rifle cartridge in this thread, not pistol cartridges.
But to make your head explode even more, I use small rifle primers in place of small pistol.

If the rifle cartridge I am loading for uses more than 65-70grs, I use magnum primers.
