My 22 shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards/meters all day! Really? Prove it!

Hot and Smokey in southern BC but I was itching to try my new to me 1407 Anshutz,it did not disapoint.
I shot 5 targets and 4 qualified .I only had one spoiler group a .533 in my first attempt

Rifle 1971 Anshutz 1407 Match 54
Scope is a Vortex HST 6-24x50 with BKL rings.
Ammo Center X

Distance shot 51 yds

Group sizes .388/.256/264/.293/.125
Average group size .265

Great shooting, Ryan. That's a good rifle.

I shot my new-to-me Anschutz 1807 for the first time yesterday and I have to say that Savagecanuck has outdone me by a good margin because he really knows what he's doing with his 1407. I know this rifle is capable of better. As this stock is not specifically designed for BR-style shooting, I used a wedge attached to the accessory rail.

The distance was 57 yards. The groups were shot left to right.
0.475, 0.407, 0.460, 0.272, 0.357 inches, with the average 0.394 inches.
The scope is a Sightron SII 36. I used SK Standard Plus ammo.

Great shooting Glenn. Yes the 1407 has some unreal accuracy. It didn't seem to matter what type of Lapua SK ammo I used it liked it all.I also had 5 group's in the teens yesterday one on every target. My last target I was going to try some X act but I left it at home

Great shooting Ryan, I think that's the best set of targets I've seen you post so far!

Good effort too, Glenn. Hopefully now that you have more time to spend at the range you'll be able to improve your abilities :) I'd like to see your name up on the 1/4" club, which is still open for the first successful candidate, due to a most unfortunate DQ :( The custom rifle I was hedging my bets towards making the 1/4" list is now in limbo due to the barrel being damaged in shipping :( My XXII with the tuner just might be capable, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks rabid! I think this 1407 is capable of the 1/4" club. I just need more practice or a better trigger man.Last night when I was shooting the target dots were fuzzy from the smokey sky's that we are living with. It's like the apocalypse out here this am you can barely see the sun it's so smokey.
I want to try some X act ,midas ,RWS 50 and see if I get any better results.

I am very familiar with results like these, often on the last group and usually caused by human error

Hmm, so what shooting error causes these split groups? Since you're so familiar with such results, I'm sure you've determined the cause of the error? Please share for our frustrated fellow shooter johnl the corrective action he can take to eliminate this from his technique? As you are a very experienced shooter with many fine rifles, surely you have solved this calamity?

johnl, it looks to me like the rifle favors SK (and Lapua under the same umbrella) brands, it may be worthwhile to try a box of Rifle Match, Center-X and Midas +. Sometimes a slight difference in the lot/load is all it takes to dial it in.

Hmm, so what shooting error causes these split groups?

it's a mental thing......one is anticipating the shot and jerks the trigger while looking at the holes already in the paper and not concentrating where the crosshair is, matched with the inability to control ones heartbeat while shooting the group of your life...losing focus on the shot on hand and concentrating on the last 4 you took will always spoil the anticipated results of the final shot.......

So it would be helpful, then, if someone finds themselves prone to "buck fever", as it were, to set the rifle down, maybe play a game on their phone or something to distract, and wait to settle down before attempting the shot?

When I think of trigger goofs, mainly horizontal comes to mind for the resulting error. "Pushed" it left, "pulled" it right, maybe with some slight vertical depending on wrist action. The neat vertical split with minimal horizontal has me scratching my head as to how a shooter could cause this. It wasn't just a single shot though, he punched the black dot clean, with another shot just below, then split with 3 shots tight on the outer ring at 12 o'clock. His other group in the 0.4s also did the same kind of vertical 3 & 2 shot split. Looks a little too neat to be due to a "jerked" trigger IMO, when observing it is two shots tight together, not a single outlier from a group of 4.

If anything... rest positioning? Say he didn't realize he had moved the rifle forwards or backwards an inch or so from the usual position, and did so consistently for two shots in a row?

I think I explained it earlier.

I am very familiar with results like these, often on the last group and usually caused by human error -- although some may cling to
the notion that it's one of or a combination of equipment or barrel failure, ammo failure, sudden gust of wind or something along these lines. Human error is possible for everyone.

Although it does not have a "technical" aspect that can be measured and physically modified, here's as good an explanation as I've seen of the psychological aspect at play:

it's a mental thing......one is anticipating the shot and jerks the trigger while looking at the holes already in the paper and not concentrating where the crosshair is, matched with the inability to control ones heartbeat while shooting the group of your life...losing focus on the shot on hand and concentrating on the last 4 you took will always spoil the anticipated results of the final shot.......

I've always thought that human error was possible for anyone, and perhaps this never happens to you. Nevertheless, most of us are subject to the vagaries of a mortal existence. Sometimes we screw up.

If anyone wishes to pursue this issue further, it may be best to start a new thread.

IME... at higher levels, loss of concentration, refocusing on the group and grip pressure tends to be the "fly in the ointment" for finishing a really good group.

Nice shooting, especially with the SK Rifle Match. Too bad about the errant shot on the left side of the SK Standard Plus target (looking at it the way it has handwriting). It's not clear which bull it missed. That target would otherwise have been very good too. The MDT chassis seems to work well.

I didn't even notice the stray shot till after I posted. I think it was from when I was trying to shoot off-hand with my JW-25A with a target beside it. I need way more practice standing and shooting haha

Great shooting and cool gun. I added you to the successful list.

Late last week I got what I believe to be a Walther UIT Spezial (they don't have model names or numbers on them). Today I had it out for the first time and shot this with the second box of ammo through the rifle. I didn't have enough time to shoot much more because a couple of guys showed up to the usually quiet range to shoot some CF and were moving about on the wood floor of the shooting building.

The distance was 57 yards.

Groups shot left to right: .351, .454, .358, .432, .360"
Average group size: 0.391"

The scope is a new Weaver T36. Why silver? It was $300 less than the same one in black.
The ammo was SK Standard Plus.

I really like the weight and balance of this rifle and the way it shoots. I like the scope too.
