I am interested in acquiring some variation of a H&K P7. Can the experts school me on the variations ( PSP vs P7M8 vs P7M13 etc) and fair market values? I have seen a wide spread of asking prices on the EE and am pretty confused as to what is a reasonable price to pay.

Very good choice for your next addition to your classic gun collection, Sailor! Ghostie has quite an impressive P7 collection. Send him a pm and ask him to repost the pics.
Price is all over the map and dependent on the variant, whether commercial or ex-police issue, number of mags, condition etc. However, don't expect to pay less than $2k for one and even that is a conservative number.
The PSP is the original P7. It has a push heel mag release ( vs. the more conventional pull type) and lacks the plastic heat shield at the trigger guard. The gun would become very uncomfortable to shoot after a few mags as it heats up quickly.
The M8 is the 8 rd. updated version ( I believe in response to the New Jersey PD requirements, but I could be wrong) It has the heat shield and an ambi lever type mag release in the conventional position. The M13 is the double stack version which holds 13 rds.
There is also an M10 which is a .40S&W variant. It is a chunky gun and definitely rarer but for some reason, doesn't command the price I think it should.
The rarest versions are the .22LR, .32, .380 convertible called the K3 ( 3 calibers) and a Target version. These are the Holy Grail of P7 collectors. And will command prices in the $3k+ range.
The gun is heavy and the loud clack it makes while de-cocking makes it a poor choice as a stealth CCW firearm IMO. It is however a fantastic piece of German engineering. You will not find a better fitted factory gun of that era.
I wish I had kept my M8 but I traded it for a top end AR straight across and, even though I miss the P7 due to ts rarity and novelty operating system, I really love my AR!! So a good trade!
Good luck and hope you find one for a price you can afford!

I've collected the P7/PSP and had all versions beside the K3 and target version, the M13 is the one I've kept. It's a non us import marked "clean" german version that's like new in box. I love it.

In today's market expect to pay $2500+ for an excellent condition boxed basic P7/PSP. Add $500+ for an M8. The M13 and M10 were made in smaller numbers, they are rather rare and expensive, pretty much la crème de la crème of all P7's if you ask me. They are a marvel of engineering.

Thanks for the information. So none of the original PSP's have the heat shield? How big a deal is the heating issue if you were to fire a few mags worth of ammo off at the range?

The PSPs do not have the heat shield as far as I know, unless someone retrofitted one or it was a prototype ( which would be worth a lot!!)
The M8 will warm up fairly quickly also so I would assume the PSP will be quite hot. I would say if you fired 24 rounds in rapid succession, you will definitely feel your trigger finger warming up! This is the result of the HK gas delayed blowback system.

I wrote a detailed post on my P7 PSP when I first got it a couple of years ago. I enjoy shooting it more than I thought I would, and I've also not noticed any real issues from the pistol heating up. They are getting very pricey now, though.

I think the single stack PSPs with the heal release it the purest expression of the platform. I would not be fussed about the heat shield. The single stack PSPs and M8s are definitely my preference. The M10 in 40 is the rarest P7 restricted you'll find and will be priced accordingly - definitely top of the collector list of P7s. Big difference in rarity and price between the M10 and M13.

It's a bit strange that you can ask for 2500.00 a 20 year old pistol and H&K don't think they could make money on
new ones for 12 or 1500.00
I'd pay 1200.00 for a new one.

Mine must've been a surplus by the look of the ones that Ghostie posted—I touched up the blueing earlier this year and was really pleased with the result.

Master-G, I'm wondering how old yours is as it says Made in Germany vs. Made in W. Germany. I know the SIGS all had made in W. Germany from that era. Assumed HK did the same. Maybe I'm wrong.
I'd never noticed that before! I just checked my 1986-vintage P9S and that also says "Germany".
