I was touring through eastern Ontario on holidays and came across this in an antique store. My best guess is that it is some kind of military training sword, but the absence of markings, dates, makers names, ownership markings etc. is making it hard to identify. It certainly doesn't look like something some guy made in his garage. I have been searching the internet but haven't had any luck. From the tip of the "blade" to the base of the grip it measures 33.5". The leather hand guard is about 5.5" at the widest point. Anybody out there ever seen anything like it or know where and when it was made or used? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm only guessing, but the last time the Brits were serious about sword training was with the 1908 pattern cavalry sabre. Scabbard looks similar.

Sorry guys, it is not a military training sword. It is a 'baton" for mounted policemen. If you check out photos of the London Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch, you will see that same scabbard and baton attached to the saddle on the left hand side behind the left leg. Very similar to where a sword would be carried by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Thanks for the info Harry. Any chance you could post a link to a photo? I have found a couple online listed for sale since you enlightened me but it would be great to see the photo you mentioned. It's a bit of a bummer that it isn't military but it is still cool. I may have to find somebody that collects police memorabilia.
