Muzzle brake for M1A

Looking to swap out the flash hider on a Springfield M1A Supermatch for a brake.

What are my options? As I understand, the M14/M1A series use an irregular thread pitch, so readily available 30 cal brakes won't work.

Anyone aware of compatible options that are readily available?

I've also read about an adapter that can we used to add standard brakes. Retailer in Canada that sells these?

I suppose the final option would be getting a bit of the barrel chopped and re-threaded for a different pitch. Anyone in the Calgary area able to do this properly?

John, this is one of the few times I'd have to disagree with you.
The good iron brake on my medium weight NM LRB opened my groups compared to a standard USGI FH.
I know you only speak from experience and have obviously had good luck with the good iron brake but I too am speaking from the experience of not only myself but also another fella who installed one on his 18.5" Krieger.
After extensive reading on the net about others experiences, it seems to be a 50/50 shot it will work in the users favor.

Try Blackrose tactical before cutting and threading, they make a line of direct attach brakes right here in Canada.

I've got the SAI muzzle brake and it works well. If I were redoing things, I'd probably get the SEI adapter and run something like a Insite Heathen or Area 419 Hellfire...

It's pretty subjective, but I was basing my opinion on the "brakeyness" of the brake, my preception of the reduction of felt recoil. Not the reduction of group size. It's actually been my experience that any brake generally changes groups out of any rifle. If nothing else it changes POI in regard to where it is with-out a brake.

I only have a brake on one of my personal M14 pattern rifles, and it's likely coming off for this very reason. The groups opened up with the ammo I was using. I am, however, going to see if I can tailor a load for that exact rifle with that brake on, and see what kind of difference there is.

John - I've gone down the road of load development for an M1A with the SEI Good Iron brake and found that I could not get my groups to shrink back to their non-braked size. I now run a Vortex flash hider.
I'd be interested to hear about your results.
 
Try this...it works!
MUZZLE BRAKE, LRB. Designed after the original USGI M14E2 Stabilizer Sleeve Assembly. Modified hole pattern on right side (3 large holes) is an improvement over the original in reducing muzzle jump and recoil. Machined from bar stock. Made in USA for LRB

I've been doing a fair bit of testing this spring/summer.... involving barrel lengths, muzzle devices and 10 different kinds of ammo (factory and handloads). I was planning on an exhaustive dissertation of my findings in a post, but I'm still waiting on a few things to complete testing, and then there's the extensive time to compile and distill the data and then posting the info....

ETA: probably mid fall.....
