Armailite Ar102 was used as a a survival rifle long ago on trans polar flights

The KLM airlines survival rifle was essentlaly a Sudanese AR10 with no bayonet lug or flash hider. See photo below. The barrel length on the KLM survival AR10 was the standard length of just over 18 inches and the selector area was configured to preclude full auto operation. THE SURVIVAL RIFLE WAS NOT A CARBINE and was engraved as an AR10.

The Armalite AR102 Sporter was a Transitional variant AR10 with the later (Portuguese) style handguards, except that the plastic portion of the handguards was made form polycarbonate and not a bakelite composite. The barrel length on the AR102 was +18", the same as production AR10 rifles. AR102 rifles shipped to the US with no flash hider while thos in europe had flash hiders. The selector area of the AR102 was specially machined with an external block to preclude an auto position. The magwell of the AR102 was someone modified to preclude the use of military magazines and portion was cut off to allow a special short 5 round magazine. See second pic./
