NEA/BCL 102 FAQ Thread

DPMS mags don't work? Strange as they were designed to be compatible with original AR10 waffle mags.

Still early but I'd be interested to know if any original style mags work. That is AR-10 waffle mags, KAC SR25 mags, Brownells 308 AR mags etc...

It's supposed to based on an AR102 and now it sounds like an actual AR102 mag won't work or is this strictly the DPMS version?

I think it is the DPMS version only, but time will tell. Apparently the way the mag is manufactured, the sheet metal wraps around itself at the front of the mag creating a double thick wall. This double thickness prevents the mag from seating into the magwell. This is based off of info from Ryan at SFRC. I had bought those mags for this rifle and had to return them after learning this.

The ASC 5/20 mags should work from what I can tell. They don't seem to have that "double wrap" at the front of the mag. I am considering ordering one to test it.

The DPMS brand magazines have very square corners and they have a double thickness front on them. I made one fit in about a minute with a file but since there are dozens of different mag manufactures, I figured why go thru the hassle.

Good to know Ryan, thanks!

Any info on the following?

Barrel steel? I believe it's a nitride finish like all their other barrels.

Receiver, forged or billet? 6061 or 7075? Type 3 hardcoat anodized?

I can't believe the lack of specs on these things.

All I know Leg is that the receivers are forged. As for the other specs.. I have no idea. It would be nice if they put up a Web page for it on their website...

Anyone know who is offering Armalite Compatible Handgaurds?

I know of MI and Fortis, what are our other options?

Pretty sure the Fortis ones are DPMS pattern nuts and not compatible. ATRS's would be DPMS pattern as well.

Obviously Armalite makes their own free float handguards, but others I've found:

Midwest Industries
Leapers UTG
Precision Reflex
Apex Handguards
Odin Works
Lancer Systems
SLR Rifleworks
Wilson Combat

Edit: FYI, the factory handguard is heavy. 14" long and weighs 16-17 oz (without barrel nut or receiver extension) on my admittedly not super accurate scale.

I wish I could get one of the armalite free float handguards, that would look so ###y. I love Triborasaurus Rex's AR-10.

Thanks Sir!

Do you have a link to the SLR Armalite rails? I've been having no luck.

Look at any 308 SLR rail and select the Armalite 2.06" barrel nut option. They just had a sale that ended on them yesterday, and most are back to $300 USD :( You'll probably also want the barrel nut tool for $15 USD to make install easier.

I'm going SLR or Odin Works most likely, but I'm going to wait a bit for a sale.

Ah, I didn't see the barrel nut options. I have a SLR ION rail already so have there wrench also, should be all set. I'm a big fan of there rails. How much were they on sale for?

I just read this from the owner of NEA or BCL

This is Jeff, the owner of NEA.
This is probably my first post on a forum in 4 years now and will be my 2nd last. I Was skimming ### as we are launching the NEA102 through ### and I came across this post and figured I would respond as this kind of douchebaggary needs to be addressed. There is just so much fail here…..

Lets start off with how the majority of the AR industry works, most AR15 “manufacturers are simply AR15 assemblers, they have their rails and receivers machined by companies like mega, Aero or Extreme machine. Most do not even control the drawing package for their recievers let alone the other components of the rifle.

NEA does, we also control and designed our forging drawings to our spec.

BCGs come from places like microtech in the north eastern U.S. Again, we designed, and machine our complete BCG.
- Our bolt is geometrically superior to milspec and is made with 9310, which has a higher nickel content than the milspec carpenter steel. If you have watched NEA’s bolts over the last three years since we started making our own you will notice 3 significant design changes. Our current design has been in production for 8 months now and we have shipped over 2000. We have had 2 break in that time.
- Our firing pin is pre hardend stainless steel, again a significant upgrade to the milspec.
- Our Extractor is S7, which again is an upgrade of regular carbon steel called out in the milspec
- The Carrier is pretty straight forward with the exception of the racking and nitriding method we use to treat it.

Our barrel is accepted as one of the best in the industry and we were one of the first to nitride barrels. Millbrook Tactical and the training group from Ottawa Police both have rifles with 30k – 50k through them without any lose of accuracy from the barrel. If you dont believe me call Frank at Millbrook. Again unlike the majority of the industry we make our own barrels and barrel extension, as I write this im listening to a bar fed lathe spit out barrel extensions.

We own our own tooling package for the extrusion and machining of buffer tubes. We actaully machine the buffer caps and buffer weights.

We own our own tooling and will soon be launching our own line of plastics, including our own stock.

Heck, we even make our own pivot pins and all the detents….

The only thing that we source as of writing this is our trigger and hammer, which has been the bane of our existence. That is about to change and we are working on the castings to make a single and double stage trigger.
