New Tikka T3x 7-08 shooting 3" 3 shot groups

And this should be my last update, I have loaded up some 139gr Hornady GMX bullets with Varget powder. I used the Hornady brass that I fired so I use a neck collet die. I started at 10% above minimum since this barrel seems to like low velocity and wouldn't you know it, loads # 3,4,5 turned out beautiful. I'll mess around a little more with loads since the factory magazine limits COAL to 2.855" there is nothing I can do with that. I have some Benchmark that I want to try as it be a pretty forgiving powder as well.

I emailed Hornady and I got a great reply from them. I took that info and the promising results from the slower factory ammo from Federal and decided to start low to see what would happen. It's a beautiful shooting rifle. My son and I agree that the recoil is easy on the shoulder, we both think it feels very close to a .308 but without as much staying power. I say that because it is a recoil but I can stay on target.

All said and done I am very happy with the rifle and my load progress, I look forward to many years of happy walks through the woods with it.

Thanks everyone for your help

Cheers!

Gmx and all copper bullets need a good bit of speed to work properly. I have talked to some guys using ttsx at 3500+ fps and still never opened.

The solution to the short mag problem is to do what I did. Get a long action bolt stop and a 30-06 mag. Then you can seat even 162gr to over 3" long

Quite possibly opened very well but at those velocities it is possible the petals broke off and may look like minimal expansion except that petals are flying around inside the animal. I've done the bolt stop change out and long mag for Tikka's. Works well.

So HOW do they know they " NEVER " opened up ? Did they RECOVER them from a animal or ? RJ

25 cal hole in and out. He switched to normal lead bullets and everything died right there not 300 yards away from where it was shot.

Lots of great responses, thank you.

I have my sons Redfield on which came off his 243, I know that it is a good scope.

I put it back in the factory stock

I will try another brand of ammo today

I can see the impression from the tang in the material, after I get it grouping at least MOA with the factory stock I'll address this issue and retry it.

I've read posts from guys who simply loosened the screws to 50"lbs and they were sub MOA.

I will keep you posted.

You don't happen to be a ####ty shot, do you? Might be insensitive to point out, but not outside the realm of possibility.

Otherwise, yeah...try a known scope and different ammo.

1. Try different ammo,
Honestly, assuming that there's an issue without at least trying a different type of ammo is silly.

2. Swap to a different scope,
You've said it's suspect in the first place.

3. Put it back in the factory stock.

I owned a Sako A7 in 7mm-08 (similar rifle) that was not only inaccurate (3"+), but inconsistent. I Tried 5 different factory loads because I wasn't hand loading at the time......no luck. I swapped scopes, Burris E1 to VX2 to Elite 4200...... no luck. Free floated the barrel, and adjusted the action screws in inch/lb increments..... no luck.

I wasted $500 in ammo and waaaay to much time, I didn't feel like dealing with a warranty return, so I sold it cheap to a guy cheap that was convinced he'd make it shoot......Nope.

Pissed me off cause I though I was buying a Sako so I "wouldn't have to deal with this kinda stuff". It was too bad, cause I really liked that rifle.

Since then I've talked to 2 others with A7's in 7mm/08 that have similar problems.

Wow. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Mine shoots pretty good. I don't use a sled or anything but this was off a backpack. The first shot was to confirm that my zero hadn't changed from the year before and the next three were because I wanted to be 1" high at 100 yards....Well I guess adding a picture here won't work for me. lol Anyway mine shoots under 1/2" at 100 yards. :)

My stock tikka t3 .308 likes Nosler partition so much my wife can group under 1 moa. But I have a better shot when it comes to killing animals though hehe.

Worse comes to worse I can take it off of your hands for the right price lol.
