Scouting for Bighorn Sheep, mauled by Grizzly

Not sure which one is tougher, the bear or the man that walked out and drove himself to the hospital after having a grizzly drag him by his legs. Call it a draw.

Tough break for him. Know that area, an elusive quarry -

Lot of misinformation in that story. Actually happened on North burnt timber creek, two drainages over, they've closed that area now. Well known around here for having nasty Grizzlies and fish and wildlife likes to dump problem bears as well. When you go there, best be on high alert all the time, exciting place to be. :d Actually fairly remote road past the Panther crossing, very little traffic most of the time and just a couple of unmanned oil field facilities. Road ends at a trail head and an old exploration road goes in from there , no vehicles allowed. About 6 miles past the panther crossing. Getting out on his own was probably his only option. We were planning on riding there in a couple of weeks, but the closure is indeterminate, so we'll have to see. Gather form local sources, his face got a good swipe as well. Poor buggar was apparently cooking breakfast and was surprised. Sheep hunter, so he would have had a gun.

Phoned from a cell phone? No cell phone coverage. Mountainaire has one of the last pay phones in existence, mostly for emergency purposes. lucky for him, I guess, but he must have driven past a couple of lodges that would have helped him.

Another Grizzly attack earlier this summer to the south of Panther Corner. Take your Bear Spray.

Bear attacks are actually fairly common around here.

This one was close to home, just across the highway from where we live, farmland, not accepted Grizzly habitat.

Cut a sheep hunt there short last year just for that. Tons of bears, not a good place to be alone. Hope for a speedy recovery for that unlucky hunter.

Apparently he managed to get a shot off  -

"There was a firearm found with him and that was part of the identification that we used to come to our tentative conclusion. That weapon was discharged..."

An awful fate. Goes with the territory, spend enough time hunting in Grizzly habitat and you will encounter them. For me it's always been from a distance. So far.
