Sig Sauer Releases MCX ‘Rattler’ Short-Barrel Rifle

Posted By: Brendan McGarry August 23, 2017

Sig Sauer Inc., the New Hampshire-based subsidiary of the German-Swiss gun-maker, this week released a new product called the MCX Rattler short-barreled rifle.

The company made headlines this year when it was picked to develop the U.S. Army’s new handgun and more recently when it issued voluntary upgrades to the P320 pistol — upon which the service’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) is based — to better protect users from unintentional discharges.

Now, Sig is out with a new SBR to its MCX line: the Rattler.

“This gun was designed from the ground up to be as discrete as possible while retaining all the capabilities of the MCX,” according to the company’s website.

Sig recently demonstrated a full-auto version of the MCX Rattler, according to the National Rifle Association publication American Rifleman.

The semi-automatic Rattler comes in two versions — PSB and SBR. Both feature a gas-piston operating system, 5-½-inch barrel, 300 Blk caliber round, AR-15 style magazine and free-floating hand guard. But the latter also features a thin, durable folding stock and retails for slightly more — $2,727 vs. $2,719.

I hate that sig Brace! I am personally gonna wait for the Sig MCX Virtus. But I am not going to hold my breath. Those things are expensive tough. I would not pay for a rattler don't see the point. If I want something something that feels MP5ish I would go for a MPX then but I am sure that there are less expensive alternative.

They don't produce an MCX in 5.56 that's this short. Arguably, the ballistics out of a 5.5" .300BLK are worse than an 11.5" 5.56 (like the MCX Vertus Pistol or SBR), but it is pretty.

Too bad that the MCX is basically dead in the water in Canada, given that it's an "AR15 Variant" and thus classified as such. Too expensive to compete with most mid-tier ARs, even if the MCX is pretty cool. :)

"Dead in the water" like any other AR15 you mean? If it was NR with an 18.6" barrel do you think it would be a hot seller? There are lots of other alternatives, including but not limited to: MV, both Tavors, SL8, XCR, ACR, FS2000, AR223, etc.

The MCX in 16" is kinda just another rifle. On the other hand, in 300 BLK 9" short barrel configuration with a MP5 style sliding stock, it is truly a class of its own that none of the AR PDW can fill the niche nearly as well. It is really something you can put inside a 20 litre mini backpack in a very discreet manner and still has a lot ballistics.
