Been looking at 5.56 brakes and I`ve read the sticky guide on this forum

The winner was the M4-72 as it reduced recoil by the biggest margin but looking at the shape and the fact it has no holes on the top to disperse gases I imagine it doesn't help much with muzzle rise

So, that made me look at other options like the Lantac Dragon and VG6 Epsilon, both of which look like they are are built to disperse both recoil and muzzle rise

Has anyone used any of these - I`d be curious to hear first hand opinions
 
Brakes with top ports aren't always a good thing. Muzzle rise is caused by recoil and the way it affects your body dynamics. Less recoil means less muzzle rise and less need for top ports.

In some situations where your gun is canted (shooting through a port, urban prone, using an offset sight, etc.) the upward pointing ports can cause increased muzzle deflection or deflection in unexpected directions. For this reason I prefer brakes that only reduce recoil.

The M4-72 is excellent in reducing recoil and muzzle rise (used by many IPSC rifle competitors around here) but it is loud and has terrible back-blast. It's the only brake that I refuse to shoot next to at the bench. In open air, run and gun it's fine. Take a look at the Cobalt Customs brake as another option...very effective but lots of blast as well.
 
The Lantacs seem to work excellent on mid length AR's, seen plenty of guys at 3 gun tournaments use them. They are deafening, not too gassy, and they turn your AR's muzzle movement into that of an Airsoft guns lol.
 
The M4-72 does actually keep the muzzle down since the cuts are narrower on top
I sold it though because on my Tavor the concussion was significant, some of the gas is direct backwards.
I'd look at the dragon or any break that directs the gas sideways.
 
Another Canadian option is from ATRS; works as advertised and is a loud bugger, but that's the nature of the beast.

While I don't use one myself, most people who put brakes on their black guns compete in 3Gun and TAC rifle matches, where seconds count.
A properly fitted brake is truly amazing when you compare it to a standard A2 birdcage . There is zero muzzle rise and you never leave your target. But it is deafening!
A brake along with a good trigger will always beat a stock rifle when shot by the same person in a timed situation.

All my ARs have the M4-72 on them after trying most of what was out there, including the OEM Colt from the SA series and the IUR.

Wouldn't get rid of them, as they are the best I've found that work. YMMV.

But it's not like the AR has a hellish recoil that needs heavy taming....
 
I have a Lantac Dragon on my LMT and I'm waiting for the 28th of August for my SJC Titan which I've heard great things about.
 
I took two ar's to the range the other day. One had the A2 birdcage and one had the VG6...shooting was night and day difference and the VG was on a 3x scope. It hardly moved. Highly recommended for enjoyment!

I narrowed it down to the Lantac Dragon and VG6 Epsilon, both seem to have similar characteristics and fitted the bill for what I was after

In the end I ordered the Lantac Dragon as I couldn't find the VG6 in stock anywhere
 
As everyone said, they can be crazy obnoxious. Also shooting urban prone can kick a lot of dirt back into your face on into your rifles action.
For me personally I like a system like the AAC Blackout and Blastout. This allows you to quickly add a device over your brake that diverts the gasses forward when needed.

Just some added info... thats all

I think the lantec has an added option for that too now.

You will really like the Lantac Dragon, I have three of them, my ACR DMR, my Piston AR and my Rem 700. Really flat shooting guns.
 
I don't think a 223 "needs" a brake, recoil is easily controlled if you have good form but if you're competing then a good brake will help make you a little bit faster.
I've used a few of them and have found that I can't handle a brake on an AR ten inches or shorter, the concussion blast is too much for me to be comfortable shooting more than a few mags. I tried a Rainier Arms single chamber mini comp on a ten inch AR to figure that one out but it was fine on my 14.5. On a 14.5 inch or longer I'm fine with a brake so my 16 inch AR has a JP 2 chamber that works very well and keeps the reticle on target for fast second shots (it's quite loud though). My NR ACR has a Griffin flash comp which works well for slight recoil control without being too loud and since the rifle is heavier than an AR the recoil is less to begin with. My shorter rifles get a linear comp to keep the concussion away from me, no noticeable recoil reduction but pushing the sound downrange is nice.
