Interesting what you find in a gravel pit during hunting season.... :)

Why not?

Left side has a 7X57 headstamp, and was fired in a 30-06.

Right side has 300 Win Mag, obviously fired in a 300 Wby.

I have a very good feeling I know who, how, and why that happened as I saw the same thing from the rural part of Vancouver Island I lived. Lets just say these kind of people are as dumb as dirt when it comes to understanding firearms and when they see .300 on the gun, they get a buddy of theirs who has a license to buy a box of "300" for their gun. They end up with .300wm when their gun is actually a .300wby. Seen the same thing with a .308NM but a .308win in it.

Ted, are you sure that 300 wasn't fired in a 308 Norma? Wouldn't the shoulder show more "double radius " if it had been fired in the Weatherby?

Whatever, probably not good for the throat, but acceptable in desperation, like not being able to find the right cartridges.

That is probably what happened... forgot the ammo and somebody said, "you can shoot .300 WM out of it." So he/she took it to the pit to test it out.

i ve seen hunters using 300 wing mag for their 300 wea mag ... i even guided two ... we didnt left the camp with their combination... but you can still hit the target at 100 m ...

i think it happened to Phil Shoemaker's client more than once too ...

I know a fellow up here who bought a used 300 Win Mag. Asked what to shoot in it, and was told 180 gr is good for everything.

You guessed it, he went to buy ammo, and the clerk asked what rifle it was. He said he wanted 180 gr, and the guy sold him 180 gr 30-06!

There is an abysmal lack of knowledge out there for some if those using firearms.

Friend of mine bought a lovely iron-sighted 8X57 from me last year. I told him to get some good European 8X57 JS with a heavy bullet for the rifle, not the anemic North American stuff. It cost twice as much, but is much more powerful. "Roger that!"

He bought ammo just before heading out hunting with another good friend of mine for five days. When they came back he was more than a little disappointed because when they stopped (at a gravel pit) to check the sighting of rifle, it would not chamber the ammo. They hunted the entire five days with one rifle, Bert's "little" 358 Winchester.

"Of course we have that good stuff", and sold him a box of Norma 8X57 JRS.... :bangHead:

I overheard a "guns" conversation between 2 pipefitters this week who were both trying to outdo each other. One said he has a 7mag and it was a cannon and the other replied that he had a $5000 scope. I barely slowed down to hear that much and kept on truckin' without commenting.

I fired two rounds of 7X57 out of a 30-06 FN 49 once, that was about 40 years ago when I first started shooting.
The tag said it was 7X5, it taught me a lesson, get proper gages and good books on firearms.
Never happened again.
