Interesting what you find in a gravel pit during hunting season.... :)

I overheard a "guns" conversation between 2 pipefitters this week who were both trying to outdo each other. One said he has a 7mag and it was a cannon and the other replied that he had a $5000 scope. I barely slowed down to hear that much and kept on truckin' without commenting.

Hey, I have a 6000 dollar scope on my rifle but I'm not a pipe fitter.

I saw a guy who shot 300 win out of his 300 wby before too. He said the t was okay to do that because it was cheaper and the same idea as 22lr out of a 22 mag rifle. :runaway:

One of my friends decided to buy some 3" magnum loads for his 2 3/4" 12 gauge. He shot one before I noticed and all he said was "wow those babies kick". I took the shells away and explained why i was surprised his gun was still in one piece.

Found a few cartridge cases headstamped .38SPL and .357 Mag in a local pit this summer.
Not drawing any conclusions from that.
Could be a guy with a perfectly legit Rossi 92 rifle in 357 Mag or whatever.

I know a fellow up here who bought a used 300 Win Mag. Asked what to shoot in it, and was told 180 gr is good for everything.

You guessed it, he went to buy ammo, and the clerk asked what rifle it was. He said he wanted 180 gr, and the guy sold him 180 gr 30-06!

Ted

Ewwww. Thats a bad one. I know a guy who fired a 30 06 in 300 wm. Nearly blew his eyes out. Blew the floor plare off. Not cool.

Ted, are you sure that 300 wasn't fired in a 308 Norma? Wouldn't the shoulder show more "double radius " if it had been fired in the Weatherby?

The 300 Win won't chamber in a .308 Norma.

Both you guys are right, but it turns out BUM is correct. I got to thinking about this, and of course, the shoulders should show much more radius.

Checked the length of the fired case, and it was way too short for a 300 Win, so grabbed a 300 Win and compared them.

Good catch, BUM.

My guess is that someone had shortened and resized the 300 case to 7mm Rem Mag somewhere along its life. That would explain why the shoulders were not fully formed out sharp when it was fired in the 300 rifle. Any other theories?

I have found 7.62x25 tokarev rounds in gravel pits. I have not done such thing but if I did I would get a concealed carry holster for the off chances another gun nut comes by. Not that complicated of a task really. There are .303 british - 7.62x25 inserts but I will say 50/50 chance of using the inserts

Its like the FAL owners. Do you really think none of them have shot their beautiful rifles on private land?

This fellow got slightly burned,...........and very badly scared! :runaway:

Rifle was fine.

Friend of mine bought a lovely iron-sighted 8X57 from me last year. I told him to get some good European 8X57 JS with a heavy bullet for the rifle, not the anemic North American stuff. It cost twice as much, but is much more powerful. "Roger that!"

He bought ammo just before heading out hunting with another good friend of mine for five days. When they came back he was more than a little disappointed because when they stopped (at a gravel pit) to check the sighting of rifle, it would not chamber the ammo. They hunted the entire five days with one rifle, Bert's "little" 358 Winchester.

"Of course we have that good stuff", and sold him a box of Norma 8X57 JRS.... :bangHead:

Much confusion for NA shooters when it comes to rimmed metric cartridges... particularly for those south of the 49th...

Ted, your friends were not too handicapped with the sturdy .358 Win along...

Not at all. Bert has put literally tons of meat in the freezer with that outfit over the past thirty some years. 250 gr Speer spitzers ahead of 45-47 gr of Ball C2 and magnum primers is the cat's meow in that rifle.

It really is a little rifle. Here it is beside my 9.3X62 carbine, which has a 21 inch barrel.

To bad some of the 7mm Remington Mag fired from a 300 WM were not saved.
This duo returned a second year to sight in their "7mm" after having no success previously.

Too much to think about for our American cousins. Same reason they dote on Phillips-head screws...laziness.

I have seen 30-30 routinely shot in a 32Spl and 308 shot in a 30-06 and 303 Savage shot in a 303 Brit by people who did not know any better, and they did it for years.

Personally, I have accidently shot a 7x57 in a 8x57; a 223 in a 7.62x39 and a 9mm in a 40S&W. In each case it was because I had otherwise identical guns on the bench. Murphy.

But you probably had the sense to police up your brass so that the next guy at the bench didn't see the evidence.

Paul is on CGN as Mauser98. I contacted him, and asked him to post the details on the stock. He should be here before long.

Ted

I carved the stock from a black walnut blank I obtained from Goby Walnut in Washington state. The stock design/shape isn't mine. Years ago I bought a Jerry Fisher custom stock template from Brownells. I made up a plexiglas template and use it to do initial layout on the blanks. I changed the forend shape from American style to a Rigby style.

Here's a shot of the rifle in its early days before I changed the tip.

I.ve seen the results of a 303 brit fired inin a A bolt 7mag and another one in a Savage 7 mag. The A bolt action hung together But the stock was toothpicks from escaping gas. The Savage did not fare so well.
