Can a ross mk3 be rebarreled for 45-70? (7RemMag is now the order)

M10 with 7mm rem mag..... I think I'll do this instead, the rounds fit 3 in total top round feeds as well as I can tell with the wrong chamber but it still needs some tweaks at the rear of the mag but easily do able.

I'll ask rick if he would be willing to do the barrel as I really like his work.

cant see why not the action should be good to go .Make sure all the bolt lugs are intact.May be a mag/feed issue as the original cals were a tappered type and then again may work fine ?.
 
ya the mag might be problematic but I just need to have a barrel in a action and I could make it work via TAE I might even start out with a mosin as some guys down south have actually made some plus they are cheaper to replace if I mess up. The only reason I left my DA carbine to ATRS is 50bmg has MASSIVE everything and I wasn't messing with it.
 
Action is plenty strong enough. If my memory serves me right, I believe 450 Marlin has the same rim diameter as 303 Brit, may be an easier conversion.
 
Place a .45-70 case against the bolt head, and see if the bolt face and extractor could be made to fit.
aric84's suggestion is worth considering; .458 American/.458x2" might also be considered.
Getting the magazine to work could be an adventure.
 
Lots of ppl make .45/70 single shots on mosin actions. Could be worth a look if you don't mind that action. Same can be said of Siamese Mauser actions.
 
Ah ####e, now you got me thinkin' about something in 45/70 for my mk2, I need your address so that the wife can hunt you down LOL
 
that 450 marlin has caught my attention before basically a hot factory 45-70 from what iv read which would be nice.

Well #### now I have to find some snap caps for both to fiddle with the mag and see which one is more suited for that feed design.
 
Why not a caliber you won't have to change bolt face for?

The action will likely handle 100 000 psi, so the patty pressure that a 45/70 generates would be child's play. I eventually plan to rebarrel a Ross of mine to .338 LM and see if it holds.
 
Don't underestimate the the MkIII action.

for 7mm Rem mag.

Ok throw that 45gov idea out the window for the ross she's getting a 7mm Rem mag over haul....after the reciver is looked over.

I needed something between 308 and 50bmg anyway so this will hopefully work out.

For all the fuss, muss and expense you are contemplating, may I respectfully suggest you track down a decent .280 M-10, and it will satisfy all your desires for a magnum cartridge.
BTW the actions on all the third generation Rosses are made using chrome vanadium and were used interchangeably, military or sporters so the "28 tons" applies across the board.

Failing that I have a RF Sedgley M-10 custom in 30-06 that is a peach to shoot and the ammo is readily and cheaply available.
Yes, the bolt face needed a "ring insert" but the rest was an easy conversion.

If I could find a source for brass and bullets I would go for a 280 ross but I don't like messing around with casings.
the mk3 I have has a cut down barrel and stock and had no rear sight so I slapped a ghost ring on her works fine for 200 and closer.
At work cheap 7mm and mid 30-06 are $37 so it really doesn't hurt me that much price wise.
