Put it in a pillow case, tie it off, throw it in the clothes washing machine and add some Tide or Sunlight. Wash, rinse and take it outside. Open the pillow case and dump the brass into a colander. The washing action rubs all of the casings together and they act like stainless pins on the outside case walls and bases. The soap gets rid of any sticky residue inside and out and of course the dirt as well. If they have to be bright and shiny, Lemshine and stainless pins in a tumbler will do that inside and out. Still, you need to get rid of the grit first.
