Anybody here take their .22 (or other rimfire) to the range as well as any bigger (centerfire) rifle they have? How much do you shoot each? Which do you have more fun on?

I went to an outdoor DNR range yesterday for an hour and a half with my .22 (Savage 64FXP), SKS and Mossberg 535 shotgun. And found that i spent the majority of the time on the Savage. While big rifle and the 12Ga recoil reminds of how real gun should sound, feel and shoot. But the always feel more at ease with 22 for some reason.
Little stats for the day, in 1.5 hrs, i went through:
1/ 12Gauge: 20-25 shells.
2/ 7.62x39: 25-30 rounds.
3/ .22LR: 160-170 rounds !!! :D

I like to take various members of my firearms family to the range. I start with my GSG 1911 pistol for about 200 + rounds on clay targets and splatter paper targets.
I then do the bulk of my shooting with a scoped CZ 452 Varmint for about 300 rounds on clays and splatter targets.
If I feel like cleaning the SKS when I get home I will take it and do about 100 rounds, after all the ammo is cheap and if you have to clean it after a few rounds why not put a 100 through (lol). Sadly the family doesn't have a shotgun member at this point😟

I find that shooting clays on the berm and the splatter targets are cheap enough and add more fun. Am****n has great deals on the splatter targets and paste spots and they can be a good deal at sponsor sites, especially SFRC, when on sale. Lawreys clays are much better than dominion clays and with a scope on a 22 you can blow them apart in many different ways taking a few well placed shots or all in one go with a well placed shot.
I have the most fun with the scoped CZ as it is a dream to shoot!

I start with 3 or 4 rounds of skeet or trap, then move to 22 then centrefire and end back on the 22.
The 22 reinforces the basics for me.

Since I'm mainly shooting my rimfires at 100 yards now, I also bring out my .270 and am working on load development with it. I'll shoot up to 5 shots of .270, then set it on the rack to cool while shooting a course of targets with rimfire (both .17 HMR and .22 LR) for 30-45 minutes. 20 rounds of centerfire are shot (then it needs cleaning, done at home), up to 150 rounds of .22LR and about 100 rounds of .17 HMR. There's a good few hours at the range :)

It's nice to have an assortment when on the range. I bring the .22 because I love being at the range. No point in going all the way there just to spend an hour or 2 there. .22 you can shoot all day and is cheap. I can have some fun with the .22 then switch to my .308 for long distance shooting for a more serious session.

I always take my CZ455 to the range, unless I'm pressed for time and have specific things I need to do.
If I'm just shooting at 100m, I alternate between my 22 and something else. Gives my centerfire rifles time to cool, and keeps me busy. When I'm doing PRS-type practice, I'll shoot each practice stage twice, once with the .22 and once with the .223

Usually set up multiple targets at different spots on the range, usually have a partner or a few, sight in my bigger rifles and while they cool off I mess around with the .22 trying to see who can make the tightest group. It ends up being a few hundred rounds down range but a buying in bulk for plinking is a cheap way to spend an afternoon with friends. My girlfriend would shoot my .22 and now she has her PAL and buying herself a hunting rifle.

I bring 1 rifle case and fill it with 22's. Lever, semi, bolt and survival semi. Another case with my centerfire and then likely spend 70/30 timewise RM/CF

I can never decide what to shoot so I always bring a selection to the range or Centre fire rifles, handgun and 22 rifles. I just stepped some 22s up to 100 meters after messing with ammo and scopes.

I wasn't sold on 22lr when I first got into shooting now I own several platforms in 22lr.

I'm doing the opposite of most here and am trying to stop taking so much to the range. Taking more than 1-2 firearms makes it feel like a chore to me; "I need to shoot X number of targets today with X rifles etc." It's also difficult when shooting in a group as everyone has different stuff they want to accomplish.

Instead, I try to pick one thing that I want to focus on and go do that. My results are better and I don't come away feeling like I didn't accomplish everything I needed (wanted) to. It's only 30mins each way to the range so I can always get back again later.

I went to the range for the first time a couple weeks ago. I took both my guns, 22lr semi and a 44 mares leg. Used the 40 rounds of 44 I had brought, and about 300 or so of the 22. That was with the 10 shot stock clip, I now have the 30.

I can definitely see the fun of the 22, and it's more than just an ammo cost thing. I do have a full rifle stock for the mares leg but I haven't shot with it yet, although it too was alot of fun too. Between my 2 guns, I think the 22 is more fun for running lots of rounds through, although the mares leg is a strong contender. No matter what I will end up putting a lot more through the 22 than the 44.

Would my 22 be as fun as a larger caliber semi auto with a 30 round clip? probably not, but I am new to shooting again (been 20 years) so the semi auto is fun on it's own. Once I get more experience I may get more serious and slow down on the trigger(I found that fast double taps were most accurate for me to shoot rapidly), and become more of a precision shooter with the 22.

So ya I agree with you op.

I went to the range today and brought my stg44-22 and my Mosin nagant , I was there between 12-3 ish . Shot exactly 20 rounds of 7.62x54r in 203gr and my shoulder felt broken lol . I then went to my 22lr and I musta put between 300-400 rounds through it

^^^I did just about the same.....brought my 1955 Polish MN (which I rarely shoot) and after 10rnds my shoulder ached! A T-shirt was not enough padding:)
Set up a target at 100yrds for my Marlin bolt and it was fun testing out ammo. Shot 150rnds and my buddy (who brought his DD AR15) enjoyed the 22lr too!

Might be an age thing but I'm starting to enjoy my 22lr's again.....

Might be an age thing but I'm starting to enjoy my 22lr's again.....

Just what I was going to say...
- Started with "only" 22lr
- - Then got into bigger guns (but still kept the 22lr)
- - - These days, mostly shoot the 22lr (but still have the bigger guns)

Over the years I realized that what I enjoy is putting holes into targets. The advantage with the 22lr, is I don't need as much range, to have the same challenge!

each time i go to the range i bring my .22LR takedown ,Savage MArkII with 500 ammo for sure my SKS 60 ammo 7.62x39 one Mosin NaGant M44 with 60 ammo cleaning dont do it after shooting i shoot non corrosive ammo so im good for 2 week with out cleaning

I didn't find the MFS 203 too bD out of my Mosin. I opened some of that PRC surplus and fired 10rd from my M38 and good God does that stuff recoil. Much hotter ammo. After that 8x57JS and 22lr seemed like nothing at all.
