Yea, that sounds more plausible, or Cosmo that has been baked on by time, possibly shellac of some sort too. Good to see some nice sks still around, if it is unissued it would likely be the first Russian unissued in Canada that I have heard of, hard to prove unissued!

There were quite a few un-issued SKS rifles. I got one a number of years ago and she is really nicer Apparently they were manufacturing both the SKS and AK47 at the same time and by the early 50's the AK47 had pretty much become the standard so a lot of SKS's were manufactured and then put straight into storage. Not so lucky with my second one though its a refurb. Don't know about the gold bayonet though mine is the standard silver.

From what I've heard and read that is just a rumor. The cosmoline will not actually colour the bayonet. It is a form of gold plating from the 50's. Similar to the gold plating found on the slings. Not all SKS's received the plating, but some did. Mine appears to be unremoveable. I've talked to other SKS owners with gold plated bayonets, and they couldn't remove the gold even with elbow grease and a solvent. I would assume if it were cosmoline causing the colouring it would/should be able to come off fairly easily.

It comes off with Flitz. I've taken the "gold" off of several bayonets with it.

I would need about 15 photos to verify whether it's non refurbished but it looks good. Most of the SKS around these days aren't very high quality. It's a nice one.

Shoot it and clean it properly, if you take good care of it you likely won't see any change in condition. An sks should be shot, enjoy it for what it's worth.

You're right indeed. As what I thought. You can't see in the pic, but it is a frankenpinned original mag (serial numbers match). It's a real shame.
