I just bought a Ruger America ranch in 556/223, I'm looking for a low power light scope. Shots will be under 150m(will be making short range shots as well at rabbits etc), any one use a AR style scope on there truck/short barrel bolt guns. Any recommendations would be appreciated around $500 to spend thanks.
 
That is my preferred setup. For example my Tikka CTR with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6.5...rifle is easy to point, massive FOV at low power and more than enough magnification for 200-400 shots. I had it at the range yesterday and was hitting 4" clays at 300 yds with regularity. In your price range you have a few good choices. Check out the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 (or the new 1-8 for a little more), Primary Arms 1-6, and if you want really light weight the Leopold 1-4's are pretty good as well. Here is a pic of my Tikka:

I use a Leopold Mark 1 AR 2.5-12 X 40 on my Remington 700 on a MDT chassis. Works great. Built specifically for .223. It is a little more than $500, but sometimes you can find a deal on EE.

I use a Bushnell AR223 scope on my Mossberg Patrol carbine bolt gun....great setup.
The AR scopes are calibrated for the 223 and have decent eye relief as well.
 
My concept was similar to yours, a small lightweight 5.56/.223 rifle equipped with a 1913 rail, synthetic stock and detachable magazine. I opted for the Mossberg MVP Patrol platform, mainly because of its compatibility with the AR15 magazine.

I wanted to mount a suitable optic that provided decent quality glass and was simple to use. My search, like SSG69, brought me to Leupold. The Mark AR Mod 1 3-9 x 49mm scope (https://www.leupold.com/scopes/rifle-scopes/mark-ar-mod-1-3-9x40mm) was priced right for my budget, has a simple and uncluttered duplex mil dot reticle and comes with a BDC dial for 55gr. .223 @ 3100fps. Furthermore, it came with a Leupold Mark 2 IMS mount.
