Got a 257 Roberts coming........she's here!

So I traded my 13lbs 260rem for a Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts. Got tired of carrying around such a heavy rifle in the winter and wanted some more walnut and blue in the cabinet.

So what do you guys like for the Roberts and what do you like to hunt with it? I'm most likely going to use it for yotes but who knows what the future holds.

I've got one on the way as well. From what most of my searching has found partitions seem to be the favourite for deer and 85 grain nosler ballistic tips for coyotes.
 
I use mine for deer only. 100gr Hornadys with IMR4831 for years but am switching to 100gr NPs.

My father in law sold me his, love the rifle, in a Winchester featherweight, I don't reload so it doesn't get shot anymore. Wish i did because I love the round.
 
I really like my 760 in 257 roberts with 117gr bullets. Great caliber for deer hunting and harvested one bull elk with it so far. Have never tried it on yotes, cuz I've got other toys for that!!!!
 
My #1 International shoots .5 MOA with the 120 Hornady H.P. And kills deer like lightning with little damage.
 
I shot at least a dozen whitetail and mule deer with my M70 featherweight and Weaver 2-7 scope, usually with 115 -120 grain Nosler partitions pushed to 2800 fps with IMR4350. Also used some Winchester factory loads, both 117 and 100 grain, both of which are under powered in a modern rifle and still seem to kill deer OK. In my opinion it is about as ideal a deer cartridge as anything could be. I have used .243 and .250 Savage on the lighter side, and all kinds of cartridges on the bigger / more powerful side and I like the .257 best of all for deer in the bush or on the open plains. I also used that rifle with 87 grain handholds for quite a few coyote hunts but for that activity it was an unlucky rifle and I never shot many coyotes with it. Killed a couple very dead when everything came together though. I wouldn't use that cartridge if I wanted to keep hides, it is not hide friendly.

I've had no trouble killing deer with the 100gr Hornadys but that bullet has been discontinued. I have about 400 on hand but started tinkering with the NP for something to do while shooting up the Hornadys. The 100gr weight is about perfect for deer at 3000fps.
 
I use the 110 gr accubonds. I shot my last three whitetails with the accubond in a Browning BLR, and all dropped in their tracks. Love the round. I have never shot anything but whitetail with it. My first 257 was a Ruger No 1A but I have since switched to a BLR. The Ruger was more accurate, sub moa all day long. The Browning puts two shots together but the third opens up to 1.25 inches. It's good enough for me though, you will love the round.
 
About to be another Roberts lover as soon as Freddy pulls the trigger.
I would like to know how many there are on this sight.
There are so many good bullets and so many powders that will work in the 257, but I find that the 4350's work best in my Ruger.

As much as I like my 257R, I think that the 243 is a better round in some respects.

- 243 velocity is pretty much on par with similar bullet weights with the 257.
- The 243 is better suited for a short action.
- Factory ammo is much easier to find as is brass for reloading.
- Small detail, but there is a much larger bullet selection with the 243 and many of those bullets are better suited for LR shooting.

Splitting small hairs tonight eh, you do a lot of long range hunting in New Brunswick?

We don't do a lot of LR hunting here in NB. My comment was about the bullet advantage the 243 offers for LR shooting, not hunting.

You're right about splitting small hairs. The fact is that I won't be trading my 257 for anything anytime soon. I like it a lot more than my 243. :)
 
I have a box of 120gr BTSP Hot Cores and a box of 117gr SST's coming with the rifle so I guess I will start there. Now need to find some dies and brass. I have H4831SC, H414 and BL-C2 on hand, anyone have any luch with those powders? I was thinking the H4831SC might be good for these heavier bullets?
