The SL8 Mods, Info and FAQ Thread

Could anyone enlighten on where to find a g36 grip+stock to replace the silly thumb hole stock on these ? How much will that run ? Do I need a new receiver as well? The sl8 receiver seems to be mostly plastic.

I believe Wolverine Supplies plans on bringing in the Hera buttstock conversion kits again (if I remember correctly). Then add either an AR buttstock or an ACR buttstock. Or if you're truly committed to the G36 line of thinking then, as stated above, you've got some research to do.

The G36 conversion will also change the trigger group as it is part of the stock. I have one that I may sell if it makes sense dollar wise. If you are interested, do your research and make an offer. I have a second folder as well that can be swapped on to change the length of pull.

You mean ACR?

Here is my work in progress.

Other than LAR 10rd mags IMHO...

I bought the HK factory G36/416 magwell conversion. It's worked well for me. Wasn't cheap, but nothing good ever seems to be.

I mean in the SL8 specifically, it's a precision rifle and being as accurate as it is I never cared to have more than 5 rounds since every shot went where it was supposed to. I treated it like a precision bolt gun and never wanted to get the barrel hot.
Rifles like AR's, XCR's, ACR etc I treat with more of an assault rifle mentality and do enjoy a LAR mag or Beowulf magazine since I'm less worried about getting them hot and reducing barrel life.

My second SL8 was set up very close to what one20ish's rifle looks like above and the only reasons I sold it and kept my ACR was because of the barrel swap ability of the ACR and I was getting about the same accuracy from my ACR with stainless non restricted barrel conversions. I now have my ACR set up in 223, 300BLK, and 6.8SPC which wasn't possible with the SL8.

IMHO if you feel you need more than a 5 round magazine in an SL8 you may be using the wrong rifle for your style of shooting (unless you're using it for gopher hunting :))

The SL8 barrel swap takes three minutes or less (one minute to strip, 30 seconds to undo the first barrel, 30 seconds to tighten the new barrel, one minute to put back together), you just need the tools (trunion mandrel and barrel nut wrench. This is also assuming you are using entire barrel assemblies, not stripped barrels, which are another story.

Of course, finding a barrel to swap to is the other difficulty. . .

I respect where you're coming from with that opinion, however I like that my SL8 is versatile enough to use for different "styles" of shooting. Just because it's accurate doesn't mean I won't shoot at a large number of targets with it, and the less reloading the better.

That may be true but I can swap calibers in my ACR in one minute or less without tools and it uses AR barrels (slightly smaller gas port) which are easy to find or have made.
The SL8 is a great rifle in every way if you're ok with being limited to one caliber, my second one had the HERA lower which takes care of most peoples complaints about ergos, I never had a problem with the ergos of my first one that was completely stock but the HERA lower is definitely an improvement. It's easily the most accurate non restricted semi auto out of the box available to us and I'm really surprised it wasn't/isn't more popular considering how everyone on this site seems to think every semi over $2000 should shoot 1moa and the SL8 seems to be the only rifle that actually delivers on that.
I still miss it some days but with my stainless match barrels my ACR does everything the HK did and more which is why I kept it and sold the HK even though the ACR costs more and building conversions isn't exactly cheap either.

Made a trade deal and have my third SL8-4 inbound. Maybe this one will stay in the collection a little longer than the last one.
This one has the G36 stock. Hopefully it likes the same load my last one did so load development doesn't take too long.

Here is the 2002 Surefire catalog which shows the G36k Surefire M560 (A, B, AB) and G36 M570 (A, B, AB) Hand guard with flashlight. The specs are all there, with a parts breakdown.
This file will only last 30 days, that's the only site my work internet will let me upload to.

Some pics of my recently completed "Stock Block Conversion". The parts were all obtained through a combination of HKParts.net (imported through ###### Armory) and RKS in Spain. The conversion process itself was pretty straightforward, thanks to the excellent information provided in this sticky. Particularly helpful was the article on shaving down the genuine G36 Trigger Housing to fit the SL8 Receiver. In any case, it all came together once I figured out how to strip and reassemble the typically over-complicated German Trigger Mechanism. Mein Gott, what a pain in the arse the first couple of times!

The previous owner had the barrel cut to 18.6" and threaded 1/28. I was able to obtain a 1/28 threaded HK Flash Hider from HKParts.net to give it the correct look. When purchased, the rifle had been converted using the "Top Notch" one-piece conversion kit. I wanted something a little bit closer to the genuine article, so for that and a few other reasons (eg. to provide more weight in the rear to balance out the front-heavy weight of the match barrel) I decided to go with the HDPS aluminum Stock-Block system.

Without further adieu, the pics:

In anticipation for the HK243, I acquired some other barrels to make my dream family. We all know how that turned out, so I got another SL8 instead.

Random photos for viewing pleasure. (I don't have any camera/lighting skills)

My last configuration.

When the G36c barrel arrived.

Recently I got the Surefire M560 B Handguard for the G36k. I noticed that Surefire added the mounting bracket for the HK factory bipod, meanwhile HK has never made a G36k length handguard with that mount. I was curious to see if it fits, and it does.

Bipod folded on the G36k handguard.

Zombie Apocalypse version?

Introducing the SL8-C. Very light weight, very well balanced, SL8 with G36c barrel.

And the Hi Cap model.

This SL8 looks strangely comfortable. Thanks for the photos.

I've always been fond of the French National Police configuration:

IDZ stock, new HK Al handguard (K length), bird cage muzzle device (never liked the "prongs", they seem to be just begging to snag on something), K length barrel, and HK low-profile rail with backup iron sights. Looks like an Aimpoint T-1 or something on top.

TommyBuilt announced his G36c conversion kits in 300 Blackout are about to be released. Unfortunately, 800 USD is the estimated price point.

This would be one of the most affordable ways of getting a G36c length setup. HK G36c barrels currently sell for over 1500USD down south due to their rarity.

I'm a little ticked, since I just got myself a HK G36c barrel. I probably would have waited for this since it would be new instead of a used LEO trade in.
