Hey guys,

Just got a XCR-M in 308 and want to get a scope and rings for it. There's so many choices, I'm just overwhelmed. I'm planning on shooting to about 300 yards and have a budget of $1500. Any ideas? Thanks!

What style of shooting? The XCR-M is a heavy gun, so personally I would opt for something on the lighter side as opposed to a heavy / high mag optic. My Elcan OS4x, for example, feels right at home on my BCL and it's more than adequate for 300 meters. A 1-6 or 1-8 variable would probably be a better option in terms of availability and $ though.

If you were going to say "fack it" and buy a primo optic - this might be up your alley. Probably past your $1500 mark in Canada unfortunately. The cheaper 1-4 Accupower or 1-4/1-6 Accupoint might be another option. Either way, with a Trijicon product, you are going to get great performance.

Cheaper yet, you might look at something in the Vortex PST/PST 2/Strike Eagle line up. Hell, you could even consider the Primary Arms ACSS red dot and run a 3x magnifier behind it.

My taste in optics may not be to your liking but it's at least a place to start. The first thing you really need to do is determine exactly what it is you want to do with the rifle and the rest will flow from there. One last thing, depending on what you kind of optic you choose, save some money for a good quality quick detach mount of some kind. You'll save yourself some headache if you ever have to remove your optic for cleaning/transport/swapping.

I'll be putting on a vortex pst 2.5-10 x44 on my "m" when it arrives (09/26/17 as per can post tracking...can't wait!).

I'm going to be hunting with this rifle, so if things start moving I want to be able to pull back the magnification. And at 2.5x although not as good as 1x, I'm still able to shoot both eyes open. I've been practicing with it on my xcr-l.

What Davemachine said about qd mounts is a great idea if you have more than one msr or want some versatility.

I use the warne msr qd rings in two scopes right now. A hi-lux cmr 1-4 and pst 2.5-10, with some more on backorder for a 6-18x44. If I'm going out to do some cqb drills then the 1-4 goes on, want to reach further out or do load testing 6-18... I wish there was a 1-25x50.... then one could do everything.

With this budget there are a number of good options, but others are most likely in a better place to comment than me. I had more expensive optics, but then swapped out for a cabelas covenant - yeah, sounds nuts but works for what I want.

A well designed quick detach is a very good idea, just make sure you mount in the same place as XCR rails are not T marked. This will be very handy when swapping optics for close / far and barrel swaps. I've been looking very closely at Kinetic Development Group mounts, and I recommend you have a close look at those, well priced in the market and have proven return to zero mounting.

Mostly going to be shooting at paper or steel. Not planning on going hunting but may in the future. Thanks for your advice, I'll take a look at those.

SFRC is having a 12% sale, anything from there that'll be good? I could stretch my budget to $2000 if it makes a significant difference.

Prophet river has got a good sale on bushnell scopes the elite series is pretty good fits your budget. Ps all glass is made in China japan or possibly the Philippines. So unless your buying some top notch European glass it’s all the same stuff.

i run on both 223s Leupold Vxr patrol--1.25x4---with Burris peper mounts-clear glass illuminated great warranty and clear as day-about 1 grand each with mount-
