Hey folks,

I'm looking to get a 3" O/U for hunting (mostly waterfowl) and have a ballpark budget of $1,000. If I shoot two cases of shells a year through this gun I'd be surprised. I know fit is key with a shotgun.

On the one hand, there's a new Turkish gun like the ATA SP, apparently a copy of the same action as the Beretta 686 and they make the new Orion I for Weatherby or one the Huglus. I see the appeal of a new gun and warranty, but despite reading "Turkey is the new Japan" and countless reviews of "Turkish delight", I just don't know if they have the track record yet.

On the other there's a good used Citori or 101 (or the like). I'm a blued and walnut kind of gun and fixed chokes don't bother me once they're reamed to IC/Mod. They seem to be available in my price range with a bit of digging and have quite the track record.

I think I know which way I'm leaning, but thought I'd ask the brain trust here.

Well - I assume you are talking about the old 101's. Nice guns - but the chromed bores will challenge your desire to open up the chokes. Now if you can find an old 3 inch chambered Superposed...

A Citori with choke tubes should be quite possible within your budget, and one without tubes certainly, including the cost of choke reaming to IC/Mod if necessary.
Assuming that a Citori fits you well enough, it would be my number 1 recommendation.

A 30 yr old Citori or 101 will outshoot/outlive any new Turkish gun in spades. Spend your 1k wisely, especially if you like walnut/bluing

Well, I ended up buying a BSS from a sponsor...a little off the list since they usually seemed to sell for more than I wanted to spend.

Thanks everyone for confirming my thoughts on getting a good used vs. a new Turkish.

A BSS will serve you well. Nice purchase! And they were definitely designed with the North American waterfowler in mind. Big robust tough guns!

That's exactly what I thought when looking for an O/U last year. Found a VG used 30' Citori with Invectors for $1k. I use it for informal 5 stand. I figure I could use it for 5 yrs and still get all or most of my money out of it.

Do the 101's compare to the fit of a Browning?
My Citori has a lower comb than my SKB 600 had. Fits me better.

101 is big and burly - I wasn't a fan compared the the citori. But it's alot of shotgun for the money - just decide if you like the heft. Receiver was thick in the butt and the forend too club- thick for my liking. HOWEVER- I did shoot one of the FN manufactured Select and it was butter. Big kick though, but shot right where you looked...

I had a good look at some Huglu shotguns at Prophet River today, and I took home a SxS. The fit and finish is quite good for the price range. That being said, I would go with a used Citori for a clays gun that sees a lot of volume shooting, but for a hunting gun, I am willing to try the Huglu.

Hey SJ...did you really buy a Huglu? With all the nice guns you own, I wouldnt have thought you'd buy turkish. What made you have a change of heart?

I am no expert but i own a Lincoln brand over/under... love it. If i was in the market for a new one, i would be taking a hard look at their products. Only hard part is finding a Canadian dealer willing to import one for you.
