$1,000 Hunting O/U

Hey folks,

I'm looking to get a 3" O/U for hunting (mostly waterfowl) and have a ballpark budget of $1,000. If I shoot two cases of shells a year through this gun I'd be surprised. I know fit is key with a shotgun.

On the one hand, there's a new Turkish gun like the ATA SP, apparently a copy of the same action as the Beretta 686 and they make the new Orion I for Weatherby or one the Huglus. I see the appeal of a new gun and warranty, but despite reading "Turkey is the new Japan" and countless reviews of "Turkish delight", I just don't know if they have the track record yet.

On the other there's a good used Citori or 101 (or the like). I'm a blued and walnut kind of gun and fixed chokes don't bother me once they're reamed to IC/Mod. They seem to be available in my price range with a bit of digging and have quite the track record.

I think I know which way I'm leaning, but thought I'd ask the brain trust here.

Just curious Cory why you are giving up the third shot especially for waterfowl . I know for me I usually score with no.1 and no.3 and if I am going to miss it seems to be the second shot
Cheers

Thats so funny....I noticed that myself. Im usually golden with 1 and 3. My number 2 is where my highest miss percentage is!

Some kind of misguided romanticism with double barrels? ;)

It won't replace my Auto-5 as my main gun, just for nice days...and I can't remember the last time my 3rd shot connected with anything

o/u in the goose pit can be a bit of a pia, it is the one place I don't want a break action.

Been using mine since '91 in pits, layout blinds, ground blinds, boat blinds and never had an issue yet. Generally speaking a pit is a bit tight on space but I've never been in one where anyone shot from a seated position which means I only have to remain standing a few seconds longer after emptying both barrels to reload again before taking a seat to await the next flock. At least I assume loading it is the PIA you're referring to?
