there are two parts to your quest. Low recoil and accuracy.
When my son was 10 he was shooting a light 308 rifle in competition to 600 yards. He needed mild recoil and accuracy.
The solution was the Sierra 125 gr flat base soft point. It was very accurate. I loaded it with around 36 gr of 4995, if my foggy memory is correct.
If recoil is a function of rifle weight and bullet weight, try shooting heavier rifles with light loads. As a boy I was given a .303 with a single SSG lead ball loaded over something. The result was no different than a .22.
Hi John. Just out of curiosity did that rifle have a 1-10 or slower twist??? Not that it would make any real difference in recoil but it could effect accuracy. I did something similar for my grandson with Robinette bullets weighing 135 grains through a 1-14 twist barrel with similar results.
