Hey, anyone know why the Model 70 Super Grade's are so much heavier than the regular Sporters?
That's it eh. Amazing that it adds a whole lb difference. A 270win is 7lbs 4oz in the shorter and 8lbs 4oz in the Super Grade. Thanks for the replies!
The website description for the Featherweight also indicated - "FEATHERWEIGHT PROFILE BARREL". Not sure how much difference in barrel profile there is between the Super Grade and the Featherweight if at all. If there was that could account for some of that weight as well. Anyone out there have both? Weigh in?
The fwt muzzle is .530" if I remember right "to lazy to go measure mine. The supergrade is a standard sporter profile (around .620") the chamber area of the fwt is also turned down pretty thin compared to the other profiles.
My scoped fwt 30-06 is 8.5 pounds. My supergrade scoped in 7mm-08 is a pound and a bit heavier.
Thanks for the info Hometown
Don't take the published weights as gospel either; every piece
of wood is different and the guys that write the ad copy are known to
make mistakes.
I've got a Cabela's 1 of 500 Feather-weight Supergrade in .270 (22" barrel) that weighs a few ounces more than my 25" barrelled .375 H&H Alaskan. Funny how much weight is reduced with a hollowed out forestock made of
straight grained wood. Winchester catalogues it at the same weight as the African Express; which suggests that they have some
pretty good dope down south.
I was given a stock for a CZ 550 Magnum once that is so heavy that I thought they had sent the whole
rifle when I tried to pull it out of the box. After checking carefully to see
if they had remembered to cut the tree down before carving the stock, I phoned to
see if the stock had been drilled and packed full of lead. Nope, that's just how heavy that chunk of
walnut is. It came in handy for calming down the .416 Rigby though.
