Hopefully the recent directive to move "some" items out of ITAR and into the realm of the U.S. Department of Commerce will ease the restrictions on Furriners buying accessories like scopes, bipods/tripods, magazines, ammunition, reloading components, etc. in the U.S.
Whole goods (firearms - rifles/shotguns) won't be affected according to reports, but stuff which "can't" be used to move projectiles down range could well be loosened up by Spring 2018.
On my business trips to the U.S., I make it a point to drop into the local gunshops (big box or independent) to see what they've got on the shelves....the three things which spike my bloodpressure are (a) the quantities of everything available for sale and (b) the variety of products on the shelves and (c) the prices, which even when converted to Cdn $ are often 50% to 75% of what the costs are back home. I know some of that difference is for customs/international border clearance charges, a touch higher freight, but the rest is importer/distributor padding and possible additional markups by more third parties. Mags for my X-Bolt are about 65% of Canadian retailer pricing, Tikka about 50%, powder is approximately 30% to 35% less.
Ammunition, surprisingly, is not that much difference in price. That is probably because there is F.E.T. (Federal Excise Tax) on ammo and complete firearms in the U.S., which isn't applied on shipments to Canada.
Grrrrr.
