Hi all. So, I am in process of fixing up an old rimfire rifle and it did not come with a buttplate. The stock shows sign of having one previously. Anyways, I am not restoring it, but rather having fun with it, so the question arises. Does anyone see a problem with filling in the holes and running it without the buttplate or recoil pad? I have seen guns before without them. Just looking for your opinions or experiences.

Thank you. That is kind of what I was thinking. Funny too, as I said, there is holes from a previous buttplate, yet the rear of the stock is actually rounded already. Maybe missing longer than I thought.

Awwwwwwww mann, git a flippie-flawppy and dew the rite thang.
The right thing!?! Yikes! Ive yet to see one myself, in person or on the web, that id be happy with on any of rifles. Id rather look at some finished end grain or a wood plate than bubbas old flip flip, jmho. Something like this wouldd be very simple and cheap to do,

Wow. That looks very nice. Only thing I forgot to mention is that the stock is so rough, broken 3 times apart and missing a couple of pieces. So I have decided to fix it up, then prime and paint it. Nowhere near original, but am having fun with it.

Looking at it again, even though I am painting it, I will do as you posted as I can contour it as well as seal the rough end grain. Thanks again.

In that case, fill the holes and cracks in the butt before painting.

I have an old Marlin 81DL with the same lost butt plate issue and I just shoot it. Unless you're OCD, you'll never notice the missing plate.

Or maybe something like this if you're recoil shy;):d:

It'll be prone to falling over if you leave it standing up on smooth surfaces. It sounds like a tiny detail, but it's actually really annoying.

That looks mighty handsome (except for the screws).

To the OP, it's not a safety issue, so have at it any way you like.
