The Kodiak & the Bull Moose

Something to be said for increasing speed as bullet diameter (actually cross-sectional area which is proportional to the square of diameter) decreases. Seems to be a threshold at which shock increases dramatically to increase the chances of a 1 shot DRT kill. For example, tremendous shock imparted by a 300gr TSX .416 caliber bullet impacting the kill zone on heavy game at ~2500+ fps.

Take the .375 Moose hunting again loaded with a lighter faster bullet? Might see a positive difference in performance? Ears might droop? :p

The difficulties I see with a .25-06 or the like on heavy game is when the shot angle is unfavorable, when the shot is brush-obscured or for breaching heavy bone which small bores have a tendency to pierce rather than smash.

Agreed on the speed, the 375 in my opinion works better when pushed at more than 2300. A one shot kill is never a guarantee but I expect the 300gr AB at 2500-2600 would offer more rapid expansion and impart a bit more shock . For the same reason on moose and North American game the 416 seems to work better with a 300-350 gr pushed fast. In the 458, I like the 350gr X @2600+
Not saying big bored are needed on moose but if you have them
And you enjoy them... Then use them

My .40+ calibers do just fine.

Funny I shot an elk this year which is far tougher than moose. 1 shot with the 8mm rem mag and he dropped like he was hit by lighting... I guess for moose I will need at least a 505 Gibbs oh wait I shot a huge bull moose this year as well with my 8 mag and he also dropped instantly ..;)

I understand why you feel that way but I have dropped two moose, (a cow and a 34 in bull), the cow was hit in the neck and tipped over after one step. The bull was hit in the lungs before the bullet lodged in the far shoulder. He just dropped in his tracks. Both were shot with my Win 300 Mag using 180 gn corelocks. Saskatchewan moose are just as large as the bull in your photo. Hard to believe the 375 is too small for moose! Lots of Pro Hunters use them as backup guns in Africa. BTW, my largest caliber rifle is a 300 Wby Mag.

Was the Bull up close in a highly agitated and aggressive state (and potentially dangerous) responding to your calls?

Look at the first part of the sentence you underlined: "With solid bullets.....". With proper expending hunting bullets lots of "shock" is transmitted.

I hope you're just having fun and trolling with your big bores over .40 cal, some may find your idea of a suitable big game cartridge a bit ridiculous.
