So.. Now that the 10-22 has lost its apeall... now what?

Hasn't lost its appeal to us.
If you can't hit a grouse in 10 shots it's time to hang up the hunting cap on the fireplace for good.

Basic ruger 10/22 could be found for $350 nowadays... not $475

Okay sorry.
$369 at Cabelas. After Ontario rape tax $450 dollars.
Plus more if you are shipping it.
Still an overpriced rifle.
There's as good/better rifles out there for half the price. Majority of the appeal of the 10/22 was for guys who like to shoot 1000 rounds into a dirt berm as fast they can with 25 round mags just because. Hey I used to do it too. Then I got bored and wanted a rifle that could shoot really well out of the box and not need mods to lock a bolt back on an empty mag....

I'm thinking the HK-G36 2LR is the best option on the table so far.

It has no obvious short comings that I know of... but need to investigate further.

ISSC Mk-22 SCAR 22LR and GSG-25 22LR have a host of reliability issues reported on line... hard to clean too.

I'm not a fan of "nutnfancy" on YouTube....but take a look at his Marlin 795 review. After reading your thread, I dusted mine off and took it shooting yesterday. Just a riot~and it gobbled-up everything I fed it.

^hate to say it, but that's what I think every time I hear people going on about high-capacity mags. Why? Because I've seen it so many times! The OP has different plans, which I get. I don't think I'd chance a new model unless it's proven 100% reliable. Like millions of Marlins have.

If you look around, you can find ruger 10/22 at SFRC for $320 before taxes.

If you need a 10 round semi-auto to hit a grouse, it's time to hang up the hunting cap, too. See how that inherently misguided logic cuts both ways?

How true, so very true...
But, if there are 10 chickens and you get all 10 with 10 shots one might have to complain about the cost of ammo , the amount of work to clean the gun and the chickens and worry about if one is over their bag limit ;)

It's always something, as they say ;)

As to the OP's actual question, a Savage A17 with 25 round mags plinking at ~2600 FPS would be seriously fun (if a little costly for ammo).
